| I personally like the finished look of a lure that gets screw eyes after the clear, but the integrity of a bait that gets them before the clear coat seems to be better...i.e. less chance of water getting in.
Which do you prefer? |

Location: Des Moines IA | I really like the look of a screw eye and cup washer after the clear coat, but IMHO I also believe strength should come before looks. If you epoxy them in, and use the long magnum eyes, either way you really should be fine. Just a little extra added protection if you clear coat them in. |

Location: Oregon | Both ways work fine...I put mine in before but some great baits are put in after...........Phantom for example. Anyone know where you can find cup washers large enough for .092 screw eyes?

you can get those on your .092 shaft. I put em in before clear, probably a bit anal. do it after having a mass produced bait(won't mention name) screw eye blow out on me on a fish. not a good feeling. but it wasn't a .092 probaly .072

Location: Oregon | I would guess that putting them in before clear does help strengthen the lure...never really thought about that tho. I think some guys use wood that is too soft.....I won't mention names either but a couple of the most popular baits out there use Western Red Cedar which in my humble opinion is way too soft for a screw eye and musky.

Location: Oregon | It's brown yes, but not dark brown like mahogany. If you pick at it with your pocket knife it will come apart......wonderful stuff to shape but just not tough enough I don't think.
