Subject: Why do you fish for Muskies..

I was asked this morning by a co-worker and I quote... "What the He!! is wrong with you?" after explaining I drove 6 hours on Sat. morning with my son to attend the Milw. Muskie Show and help out at the M1st. booth. After I was finished laughing he asked another question... "Why do you fish for Muskies?" "What is it that makes you NUTS" My reply was approx 1/2 hour long... I also have a tape in my desk (He really was scared when he saw this) of a TV show of a famous fisherman. I simply brought him into our conference room and put the tape into the company training VCR/TV and he got trained....little top water action really gets em going! I think the quote was "JESUS!!!! That's in Lake Minnetonka???" He wants me to take him out fishing this year.......... Why do you fish for muskies?

The easy answer of why I fish for muskies is this: I love to be outdoors, and I love to chase fish, and muskies because they are what I'm best at.
The more complicated answer is that I can't NOT fish for muskies. Though not always at this dedicated level, but I've been chasing 'skies since I was 8, like my father does, like my grandfather did. So in a way I do it because I've always done it, so I continue to do so. But there are other reasons: When I'm out on the boat, concentrating like mad on how to outsmart a creature with a brain the size of a pea, for some reason it takes me away from the everyday stressors that I deal with. When I'm fishing with my buddies, it's a good time to let the AAAARRGGGGHHHH from the usual just slip away, and when I fish alone, its a time to think clearly, and work out the AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHs! I relax more on the boat than I do anywhere; from Monday to Friday I'm seen as a psychotic work a-holic with a temper about a quarter inch long, but on the boat I can relax, smile a lot more, and nothing gets to me like it does other times. I guess in a way it's theraputic for me.....and GOD to I need some therapy right now!!!!

I think that you hvae pretty much sumed it up nicely. The only other reason as I see it, is the comraderie that one feels with all the other Muskie nuts. Especially in the off season we are in right now. Just take the Ashton fund for example. If we did not fish for Muskies, the outpouring of affection that has taken place for this little boy, in all likelyhood, would not have happened. I get a warm feeling in my heart every time his name is mentioned now. I can hardly wait to met this little boy in person sometime in the future. I for one am very, very, glad I fish Muskies for a chance to associate with such a great bunch of people.

I love the outdoors and musky fishing is completely different than any other fishing. It's like hunting except nothing gets killed, unless of poor release, person that wants the fish, or a fish that swallowed the hook. Musky fishing has different aspects to it that no others have.....spending countless hours is hard work, releasing a fish is also hard work at times, and just trying to get the musky to hit is hard work. These are all reasons why I love musky fishing, because I never know how the fishing is gonna be by looking out the window and seeing the weather.

I love this sport,

I have never been able to really verbalize it...always comes out sounding like a sonnet, or something.
I muskie fish for the same reason I deer hunt. I am after a personal best, and then another, and another. I am convinced the sport is the best relaxation therapy there is.

Also, I'm nuts.[:p]

because the voices in my head tell me to!!, sorry couldn't resist. It must be true though, my fiance' keeps telling me about the talking in my sleep, yelling "Big Fish", or "Set the Hook". Its an around the clock sub-conscience obsession.[]

Got to agree with Sworrall,I musky fish becauseI like the chase. To me ,it's like deer hunting, you against the beast. Matched one on one. It gets you back to nature , just like deer hunting, you are matched with the hardest creature to snare. The thrill of the hunt is sometimes better that the hunt itself. It gets you away from the hustle and bustle of life and lets you meet people with the same interest and goals. Maybe all this doesn't make a hill of beans to some but it keeps me going.

I'm w/ Worrall....who knows? Part of the reason is the challenge...another part is other fish are easier to catch...+ I actually like the big baits + how they look + feel! I've never been "main stream" so that may have something to do w/ it...even though I've never actually landed a big one the idea that I MIGHT someday keeps me afloat.[:sun:]

I'm with the deer hunters looking to beat the personal best. And I'm with the folks who think that anticipation is half the fun of reward. I'm also with the folks who think that special rewards can require long waits. At least that's one way of looking at it. Someone else might say I've convinced myself that my lack of success only increases my excitement and fun. They think I'm a goofball for spending all those hours and not catching or even seeing a fish. But I get the last laugh, and you do, too, becuase deep down everyone is secertly jealous of harmless blissful idiots like us.[;)]

I fish for follows cause it helps reduce stress for me, and gives me a day or two away from the wife and my leg free of the ball and chain. But i still pay when i get back.

There's just something about fishing muskies. Maybe it's the constant torment of watching those follows. Maybe it's the mean look they've got on their face. Or...maybe it's just got something to do with catching a fish that would just as soon rip your arm off as spit in your eye.

I guess what keeps me coming back is seeing all those follows and knowing that I gotta figure something out to make them strike.

I still fish other stuff to keep the kids happy but if it's just me, it's skie's all the way.

There isn't anything else in this world that relaxes me more then a day on the water fishing .Even when I get mad an ticked for missing a fish or burning a nice fish.even if the fishing was bad, there is not anything like that slow boat ride back to the landing at the end of the day or night. And I am the most relaxed there then any where else that I know.

WHY DO WE FISH FOR MUSKIES, BECAUSE THE ARE THE BIGGEST BADEST FISH THAT SWIMS. Catching them and releasing them is just a thrill that cant be matched. Its like deer hunting, the thrill of the hunt is the same but letting a nice 8pt walk by and saying you could have shot him is not the same as actually holding that fish and releasing it to fight a nother fight. I love deer hunting dearly but its musky fishing that really lets me feel like i won the challenge of me against them.

I fish for muskies because it is not only acceptable to come home skunked but is is expected. Not so for walleyes, bass and panfish. Don't like to be presured.[]

How that old country song go "I was musky fishing, when musky fishing wasn't cool". Grew up with a dad who was a die hard walleye man, still is. Me and my best friend were always walleye or bass fishing, it was just the desire to fish for the biggest fish that swims. Heck back then the only pressure we ever faced was Steve or Rollie running around on Pelican.

Slamr said it for me too. My Grandpa was a big musky fanatic. So much that all of his friends and family called him Nanook. He turned my Dad on to his first musky in 1966 - before I was born. My Dad was hooked. We took all of our family vacations to the Northwoods while I was growing up - mostly Manitowish Waters, WI. I got started at an early age for the most part.

Slamr's post sums it up for me though. I just like to be on the water - could care less if I catch anything or not.

The adrenaline rush is what drives me though. It's priceless..............

There is no doubt the thrill of the hunt is what keeps the majority of us going. The anticipation that the next cast will be a 50. You just don't get those thrills from chasing panfish. Besides--I don't like to eat fish.

They are the greatest challenge in fresh water! And besides, they eat what others hope to catch!I catch a 15" bass and my first thought is "how can I rig this thing on a quick strike".We are all brothers in pursuit of this magnificent fish. Steve Oh yeah,we're all nuts too!!!![]

Pure "ADRENALINE", can't beat it!
Love the outdoors and the scenery!
Where else can you get excited just to see a fish and not catch one![:0]
It's the thrill of the "HUNT"[:p]
I don't think there is anything else like it in the world!

Because they are sooo BIG[:0] [:0] [:0] ! The anticipation and the thrill of the strike is just so much more intense to me than any other fish out there. The friendly competition when fishing with friends always makes for a few laughs, and alot of good ribbing if someone catches one or better yet, someone screws up.[]

I love going out with my buddy who hates muskies, only walleyes and perch, listening to him complain about the wake my bait just made as it crashed in the water. "Holy sh#t, your gonna swamp the boat with that thing", or the best one "If I caught a perch the size of your lure I would fillet it". Always cracks me up.[] [] Go big or go home, least that works in Euchre ,lol.
