Posts: 2112 Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | Hi folks, I have a garmin hand-held GPS, and a garmin sonar unit. I know that they can be networked to each other, but what are the advantages? Are there any? I read another post about Lowrance products, and about how you can save info from your sonar to your gps. Would I be able to display gps info on the sonar unit? That little hand held screen is a little hard to read. Thanx, Rob

Posts: 5874 | Rob, I'm not that familiar with the Garmin line, but will download the manuals and take a look. Tell me what models you have. I think they probably have NMEA 0183 and serial ports. If so, you may be able to diplay GPS info.

| I have the garmin 168 sounder. It's a pain in the butt to down load each area. You are way better off with the lowrance. My new boat has a x-15. I would rather have the cartridge instead of having to download each area at 99.00 a pop. With lowrance you can use the lakemaster series and not worry about which area you can down load. Plus the garmin has to many buttons on the finder. And with any unit, you have to shut off the fish id and switch it to sonar. What it does is take away the fish symbol that you have with the fish id and replace it with actual sonar readings. This will allow you to get an acurate reading of what's below you. When you see baitfish on your sonar, mark it and drop a fuzzy duz-it towards the bottom of the baitfish ball. The bigger baitfish will be on the bottom of the pile. When you have the fish symbol on it will read weed's and floating timber and maybe a fish once in a while. To many guys rely on the fish alarm . They think once it beeps, you are on fish. Once you learn how to use your sonar you will be way more confident on the water you are on. Musky Sarge | |||

Posts: 5874 | OK, Rob. I did some reading, and here is the scoop. The 160 Sonar only has a NMEA 0183 output. The GPS MAP60 has NMEA input and output. The only thing you can do is connect the NMEA output from the sonar, to the NMEA input of the GPS, and you can use the depth data on your GPS. Not worth the effort in my opinion. You definately will not be able to diplay GPS data on your sonar unit. Now, if you want to discuss Lowrance products and the new LowranceNet, give me a shout. This is really cool stuff.
