| Hi Gang, Hi am taking a 10 day trip to Whitefish Bay around Souix Narrows on July 5 through 14th. I would like to Know what kind of structure and presentations I should be looking at. For those of you who don't know whitefish, it is a Clear deep body of water with lots of channels, bays, and Islands near by. The forage is rainbow smelt, ciscos, perch, and whitefish. All input is appreciated. Thanks Cory | |||

| Hi Cory, Since no one has responded yet, I thought maybe I could give you a few pointers. I haven't personally fished the Whitefish Bay area on LOTW so I can't give you specifics(I've only fished "The Angle" thus far). Hopefully someone on the board can give you a deeper insight on how to fish those areas. (If you're really lucky Doug Johnson or Dick Pearson could give you few tips on this board. I'm betting my last dollar they have some pretty good tips, plus if they do respond to this post...make sure to photocopy the post and tape on the inside of your tackle box.) Also if you can, try purchasing Dick Pearson's book entitled "Muskies on the Shield". It's a very good read and it should get you pointed in the right direction. The website to obtain that book is as follows: http://www.shieldmuskies.bigstep.com/ Whitefish Bay is very much "Trout Water" in which it's deep and clear. The forage no doubt points to it as "Trout type water". Like most Trout water it's more quality vs. quantity. You'll see some super tankers in there, but be prepared for some tough fishing conditions...especially on bright clear days. You'll want to focus alot of energy on low light periods and shifting weather patterns . You will still catch fish during bright sunny days, but make sure to hit spots where you moved fish, during dusk and dawn times. Also natural patterns will usually be the norm for your bait colors such as Perch, Cisco, and Whitefish. Chromes, Blues, Greens, Whites, and Black(anything subdued) is always a good color to start out with. But if these don't work, don't hesitate in tossing out a shocker color such as bright orange or chartruese colored baits to trigger a fish. Retrieve rate should be pretty high because these type of fish are predominately sight feeders. But than again, as with anything in muskie fishing don't be afraid to experiment with a slower retrieve if you're not moving anything. Hit the rocky points, reefs, and island complexes that hold a good variety of rock, weeds, and depth changes. Now this may be an area that I could be wrong so take this advice with a grain of salt. But during darker, overcast days fish shallow, and on bright, sunny days fish the deeper breaks and structure. The reason why I say that is because that's the typical norm on Wisconsin Cisco/Whitefish based lakes. Canada Lakes could be completely different so that whole statement could be tossed out the window...Hopefully you'll have some guys respond nay or yah on this to really help you determine what to do. I know that fish will usually suspend out in the Main Basin with Cisco/Whitefish/Smelt as a forage fish in Wisconsin. The same may be true in Whitefish(I'm also just assuming since fish in Canada may respond quite differently). So treat any baitfish clump that you find on your graph as structure. Work your baits around the school of baitfish rather than through it because this is where the muskies should be lurking. It takes a little "getting use to" for fishing suspended fish, but it only takes one big fatty to really give you confidence in this type of fishing. I'm not saying that spend you're whole trip fishing for suspendos, but it would be worth to try if all else fails. Good luck and hope you nail a slob!!!! catch ya later, Krappie | |||

| Thanks Krappie for the great advise. Anyone else want to comment? Is the Angle the best place for Numbers? I have caught and seen quite a few around the Kenora area. Cory | |||

| Still looking for more replys on this subject. Thanks Cory | |||

| Hey Cory Well what Krappie is basically hitting the nail on the head,Whitefish is deep clear water with some good size fish and is more of a quality verse a quantity place but with the right conditions multi fish days are possible.Low light is the key, early morning and late day is your prime time, and also overcast days. The time period you are coming is also good,as this is when you get your post spawn bite with the bigger fish. The other angle that some people are not aware of is that a 20 min boat ride will also put you into some staind water conditions which can produce some good fishing. Where are you going to be staying? If you have any direct questions please feel free to ask. D'arcy Finlan Darcy's Guide Service www.darcyfish.com/Musky.html | |||

| Anymore of you LOTW'S fisherman out there? Cory Let them go, let them grow! | |||

| Hey there Cory. here's a web site out of Sioux Narrows. www.siouxnarrows.8k.com/fishing/home.htm They have a hotspots page that shows muskie areas around whitefish bay. There is also a forum page, but not too many guys use it. Check the archives here and the other boards for LOTW. Hope this helps. Bob | |||
