Posts: 3918 | A few weeks ago I watched part of a tv show that was really talking up the new(?) Evin 2 stroke. They offered a very convincing argument that the Evin 2-stroke is "better" than a 4-stroke in pretty much all criteria - power, pollution, economey, weight, etc. The power demos, showing the 2's bringing boats up on plane, were especially well presented. I know the show was mostly a commercial, so I'm asking you guys who know for sure...what's the deal?

| 2 stroke. The 2 stroke is simply a better design for marine purposes. Too many moving parts and too many things that can go wrong with the 4-stroke design. The E-Tec concept of a two stroke engine is brilliant and it will be interesting to see long term what percentage of the market they get. | |||

Posts: 434 Location: searchin for 50 | Just my twocents worth. I have been running a 4stroke 50hp Mercury for six years now. I have had only one problem with it. It only took the mechanic an hour to fix. Anyway I have no Qualms with my motor. I can run on a full tank of gas(21 gal. tank) for about 8 weekends of some hardcore fishing. There is hardly any noise at idle speed, you can actually talk to your fishing partner. It has always started and it was made in the U.S.A. Thats all i Have to say about that.

Posts: 23 Location: vermilion bay, ontario | i run a 4 stroke, simply for the quiet and the fuel.the only thing i hear is ,is the water shooting into the lake.absolutly no smoke .the e-tech are propbably pretty good, then the fichts were suppossed to be the answer also.but each to his own, what ever makes you happy in the end whats counts, not what the next door neighbor has.

Posts: 167 Location: Fonda IA | I've ran 50 horse 4 stroke merc for 4 years and I'am on my 3rd year with a new 60.They have been good to me the only trouble I've had is an bad regulator which was under warrenty and then recall. They start, they run ,they are quite, and seem to get super gas mileage.I couldn't see getting back into a two stroke.I can understand that if you want all out speed, but if you want a good dependable boat motor it's hard to beat them Blummer Edited by Blummingflower 3/18/2006 1:27 PM

Location: Minnesota | Ranger with regards to the commercials e-tec compares its 2-stroke self to 4-strokes. What are they thinking of course a 2-stroke will have some better performance values compared to 4-stroke. But keep in mind that Evinrude (bombardier) has some making up to do after the failure of the ficht the buy out of johnson/evinrude it was time for a clean slate. The etec was a long time coming. Those that own them love them. Time will tell on this like everything else. If Evinrude wants to compare its etec to something put it up against the mercury 250XS optimax. pound for pound.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | most comparisons I have seen done between etec and 4 strokes they seem to be comparing about a 90hp motor to other 90's.. with that said a etec is more fuel efficient, has better emissions, is as quiet and almost always lighter then comparable 4strokes. It is only when you get down to the 40 & 50 etecs that the weight is a issue, a regular 2 stroke usually weighs in about 180-190lbs, a 4 stroke honda weighs about 220lbs, merc about 204-216 for a 40hp, and for a 50 248lbs, Yamaha is 191 for the 40 and 237 for the 50, suzuki 40/50 243lbs, etec 40/50/60 240lbs just double checked the honda weight, they are lighter this year, about 212lbs

Posts: 1120 Location: West Chester, OH | OK, the etec is very heavy for a 2 stroke: So where's the advantage? After all the 2 strokes are gone, the manufacturers will need to get serious about distinguishing themselves from the rest & that will mean performance - more power & lower weight.
