Sigh.......

I just got done painting more baits then I've made over the last 5 years put together and I'm sick of it!!!!!!!!!!!

Airbrushing sucks!
Scuffing sucks!
Weighting sucks!
Hardcoating double sucks!!

But aside from coating 50 baits I'm done.

But just think of all of the joy that you'll be bringing to fishermen everywhere
I've got over 300 sitting here that I have got ready to go. I'm going to start priming later this week, and then will get to do what you just got done doing.
Only people who have been through doing the entire process can appreciate what you're saying.
Sanding, drilling, weighting, filling, balancing, priming, painting, coating, installing hardware, hanging splitrings and hooks.........I know that I left some things out.
Everything that I use went up in price this year, some stuff a lot more.
I'm just glad that there are guys out there that appreciate the time and effort that goes into hand crafted lures.
I spent the better part of the last 2 days just drilling and weighting 100+ bodies. I'm actually looking forward to painting.
If it wasn't for the fact that I'm unemployed, I'd tell my boss to stick this job.
Treats, I'm glad that you can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Just think......in 3 months you'll be able to use some of them.
I don't think that I'm the only one who has..."I HATE THIS!!!" painted on the wall where he works.

525 Warlocks, 175 Shakers, 120 Globes, 89 Toppers, 140 Oop's and not a whole lot to show for it. But when I go to a show and a kid tells me he got his first Musky on one of my baits, it all comes together. That stuff is what makes it all worth it for me lord knows I am not going to get rich. I sometimes wonder how some baitmakers can sell at the prices they do and still make money. I guess when the voices in my head stop I'll stop making baits. Untill then It is a lot of work as we all know but somtimes it is just the ultimate blast. With that said I have to clear more baits for the Blaine show( it's going to be another long night).............Doug

Wow, that's some serious #'s there guys. Jeremy and I have made a total of 6 baits. 4 of which actually worked. We are in the process of building some proto cranks, and to say the least, have become very frustrated with only 4 working baits and 2 unfinished protos to show for all the work qwe've done. For all you guys wondering why handmade baits are so pricey, let me be the first to say, it is by no means "EASY". A labor of love doesn't even put it in the right perspective. Gotta be truly CRAZY to even attempt to make baits. We are 2 prototypes away from calling it quits. Luckiliy we have only invested a couple hundred bucks so far.

Doug, keep making (or stop making, you pick) Warlocks. You got a freaking winner. The Warlock and shane's timberwolf gliders are my 2 new go to's.

It is most certainly a labor of love. I enjoy building the lures altho there are certain aspects of the process I dont particularly like.........clearcoating for example! The worst part is when you are on a deadline...I hate making guys wait and wait. This is why I dont mind helping others build lures, most people will never build them on their own, its too much work.

Labor of love sums it up Jed, and you're right about guys trying to make their own and then giving up because it is too much work. I remember spending hours in the basement making bucktails and tying walleye jigs, but I haven't touched any of that stuff except for personal reasons, since I made my first glider.
I wish that I would have saved all of my srew-ups and hung them somewhere....wait, I think that they are in my tackle box. That's one part about "seconds", they never go to waste. If there are blemishes, I use them. If they are really screwed up, they make good kindling.
It's a great hobby and is most rewarding when you get pictures and e-mails from guys who caught their new personal best on a chunk of wood or plastic that you turned into a fishing lure. You forget about the work when the finished products are getting shipped out and being used.
Well, time to get to work. 100 left to weight and fill, and then I have to pick up my shipment of primer/sealer and top coat.

clear coated 350+ Weagles and Wabulls in about 3.5 hours last night. more to come tonight.

It sucks when everything comes down to the last minute, but for the most part I have had nothing but fun doing this so far.

Beav, it's true that there's no better feeling then someone sending you pics if fish they caught on a bait that you made. Boy these fish really must be dumb if they bite on something I made LOL!!!!!

I've got one I'll have to email you a pic on. I've named the color "Mutt". It was a smudged perch Mag Treat that in a fit of crazyness just used as my "test" to see if the paint was coming out of the brush right. I plan on clear coating it and using it just to prove the point that pretty paint jobs don't necessarily mean fish in the boat...ummmmmmm I mean the only way to catch a fish is if you spend a lot of money on pretty paint jobs.

I love to hate Muskie Treats.

BTW Mikie, that's 50 until I'm done. I've already got 150+/- done. Hooray!!!!

Doug - I gotta get my hands on one of those Shakers! I was watching the clip at Pastikas and that thing looks awesome! Only problem is they didn't have the one I wanted to the Tri show. Speed er up and it's totally a little duckling/loon scooting away! Awesome!

Baldy, if you can clearcoat 350 baits in a day you have one heck of a process down! I can typically do 30 in a day if I am lucky!!

Jed.

That was under 4 hours of work. Got a good process and good help. If I didnt have this dang "real" job to go to everyday there is no end to what I could do...

True that Baldy!!

I just got done with coat 1 on the Mag's right now. I'll be doing "cheater coats" for the next couple days. I doubt that they'll be ready for Friday, but probably Sat.

Don't worry Rob - I won't.

Had my lure turner die on me overnight last night so I get to redo ten baits!!! I hate rotisserie motors.

I used to make a lot of bucktails. I personally tied something like 2500 of them in my last year of it, about 5 years ago. My labor of love turned into something I couldn't stand. So I feel your pain and can tell you that whatever it is that keeps you doing it may not last forever. If it's a hobby, treat it like one. If it's a business, treat it like one.
