After putting off the purchase of a trolling motor forever, my wife bought me one for my b-day (she got a great deal on a Minn Kota Maxxum 74lbs as a closeout). I had told her of the advice I had gotten from this web site on how to put a bow-mount motor on my run-about and how to determine the correct size. She found the thread and bought a unit based on the recommendations from people on this board. Below are some before and after pics. I still have a bit of work to do (such as add a pedistal and seat, secure the batteries, do a final adjustment of the motor to ensure it is level and add a bow mount depth finder) but for the most part, the work is done. I purchased 3/4" ply for the floor and motor mount, glassed both, made cutouts to access the storage below and installed reinforced hatch covers that would support a person's weight. Installed a trolling motor plug, batteries and wiring and an on-board charger. Had to buy new a bow light to extend the light above the motor. Took it out yesterday and tested it out. Despite the strong wind, it worked great. I can't wait until the weather warms up a bit so I can actually break her in and do some fishing. Thanks to all who offered their advice.

Photos updated after the addition of a butt seat and bow electronics

Nice work! Great job!

I love seeing people's different modifications to their existing boats.

Awesome work AFChief, you did a heck of a job with it. Now if the warm weather will hurry up you can get out there and catch a monster.

Thanks for the comments. I was a fun project but I had a hard time getting motivated to do it. I used the excuse that the motor was an expense I couldn't afford. Not the best setup as I would prefer a dedicated muskie machine (a true fishing boat). With the kids still enjoying the tubing and water skiing (and the fact that this boat is paid for), I'll have to wait until I buy my dream boat. Until then, I'l be runnin around in a runabout, making due.......

The only thing that is important is that your out there. I started in a 17' canoe. Just keep plugging along you'll get your tour boat.
