I have a buddy who tonight is picking me up a St Croix Premier 7'6" HF fast action with telescoping handle.
Rated for 1/2 to 1and 1/2 oz baits. Its at the Reeds booth at the Des Moines Sports Show.
Half price 65 bucks. He can take it back for me tomorrow if I don't want it. Is this the rod I want for crankbaits and bucktails? Sounds like it to me, but I'd like opinions... fast if you could.

gonna want something heavier than 1 1/2 oz ....... I'd go with atleast 3 oz for crankbaits like DRs, and grandmas and DDDs ......

Agree with Mike. It will be fine for bucktails, but for cranks you want something heavier. You are going to want a medium heavy rod that goes up to 3 oz. for cranks in some situations. If you like to rip/jerk your cranks to make the juke, you may want a heavier rod yet. A heavy action rod is what I like when fishing Jakes, DR's, and Ernies. The heavier action rod takes less effort to get the bait to juke than if you were to use a medium heavy rod. However, a medium heavy rod is a good all around crank rod as long as it is rated to at least 3 oz.

I like the 7'2" St Croix up to 2 1/2 oz lure. You can throw most any bucktail or crankbait and it's still light enough to feel the fish really pull

Sounds like your buddy bought you a bass flippin' stick, pretty light for most muskie baits even bucktails, although I used to use one to throw jigs for muskies.

the rod is exactly the one im picking up. it is not a flimsy rod, the HF stands for heavy with a fast tip. This rod will be prime for larger cranks, jerks, maybe some bucks but not so much. Telescoping handle? whats this all about? is that where the rod slides into the handle to make it shorter? All in all the 7'6'' will suit you better for heavier baits, as it will take the stress out of throwing and retrieving, but should still work ok with lighter baits.
are you sure that it is only rated for light baits?

Telescoping handle = flippin stick. It's a bass rod. Just my guess. Seriously get a 7 1/2 ft premier MH 3/4 to 3 oz. for Cranks. Or the 7'2 ft. 1/2 - 2 1/2 for bucktails. I used a bass rod last year for bucktails, nowhere near enough backbone.

If you are going to get a St. Croix, I would go with their 8 foot med. heavy Premier.

Rated for half ounce to 2.5 ounces.

Don't go with the bass rod, you will regret it down the road. Go with the 8 foot musky rod.

I have the 7'10"H telescopic it is also a fast action but like the rod in question it is also a bass rod. It will not have the backbone you need for most muskie baits and lacks the hook setting power you need for muskies. Not saying you need an eight footer, but you will want to get a muskie rods instead of a heavy bass rod and 7'6" or longer depending on your height and how high your boat sits in the water

Thanks guys- I sure understand where you're coming from. However, after looking at this, it's a big rod- heavy action- fairly stiff, thicker tip. Rated for 25 lb line, 1.5 oz lures. For $65 I can't get a high quality rod like it, not a Fenwick, Lamiglass, not an All Star. It's handle length fits my 14 year old well, and he'll use it with a 5601 C3 for throwing his smaller bucktails, cranks, spinnerbaits.
Appreciate the responses.
