Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | This in no way is a dig on Paypal, but there is a scam going on, and I want everyone to know about it. I know alot of you use it, including myself. Here is an E-mail I got from a family friend today:
I received from Pay Pal today a letter stating I had bought a cell phone for over 200.00 and Pay Pal paid it from my account...it also said if I didn't buy this item to report it..
logged in what I thought was Pay Pal and started to report that I "didn't" authorize this.
when it dawn on me to look at the address bar on the top.
this was "not" Pay Pals site...it went somewhere else.
I almost fell for this, everything there is identical to Pay Pals site except for that.
and because I already logged in there and also knowing that on that site will also take my real password.....
I had to redo my password for my orginal.
one sees this on TV all the time as a warning and..... I almost fell for it.
Yikes! that was close.
Watch out folks. Someone is banking on P.T. Barnum.

| Any time you get e-mail from Paypal or e-bay, send it to them....I know that the address is spoof@e-bay, it might be the same for paypal. The logo looks close to real, but never is.
Report any and all e-mails to them, and they investigate it.
Somebody is phishing...trying to get your password or account number.
I've been told by both e-bay and paypal that they never contact people by e-mail, unless they are responding to an e-mail.
Never give out any info to anyone without checking first.

Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | I get fake emails every day that look like they're from Pay Pal or from Ebay. Two things to look for. If they don't address you by your full name at the beginning of the email, it's fake. To make sure of this go to any link within the email that looks like a real Pay Pal or Ebay address. (i.e. - www.paypal or www.ebay) Don't click on it, simply put your cursor over it and look to your status bar. If it doesn't match the link that it shows on your screen, run! Just delete the email, it's a scam. Like I said, I get emails like this everyday as I'm sure many of you do. It's scary to think of how many people are falling for stuff like this.
Glad you figured out this was a scam before you got too far!

| The emails from these guys look just like ebay and paypal. Any time you get any contact saying your account needs attention Never!! answer the email Always go to the ebay site or paypal site and log in. That is the only way to make contact that is secure. Hope this helps someone else who may be fooled. |

Location: Kawarthas, Ontario | If you use Firefox as your browser it will help you avoid falling for that kind of stuff. I t displays those kinds of sites as the numerical identification of the site and helps you identify it as a spoof site. You still need to be careful of course, just an extra measure of security. |

Location: Belgium | I have the same with emails from ebay but now I recognize them. Ebay nevers asks to confirm credit card numbers etc. Also, if you get an email, select all the text in the message starting from the first line and select all the way down beyond the last line of text. Usually there is some stupid line like "what did you get for christmas?" or something similar. I have reported it several times but get no reply from ebay |

| I get these from ebay all the time and they are usually the same but, I just got a different one recently. This is a scam! Here it is:

| I also got one from paypal recently that said I purchased a $500 gift card to Pep Boys on ebay. It said I agreed to pay like $285 but never did. It asked me to click on the link to pay for it. It also said if I do not pay for it my account would be suspended.

| Beaver mentioned this early in the thread, but instead of deleting them outright. Forward them on to [email protected] or [email protected] first. Then delete them. Ebay and Paypal will go after the bastards and shut them down if they can. |

| the only thing you should save or forward to an online email (as in yahoo) so you have copies......paypal receipts for your payments.
other than that, if u're not savvy enough to do the ebaying/paypal stuff from the site console, you shouldn't be using it. JMHO.

In Holland we can download a ebaytoolbar. This toolbar alert you for auction who are almost ended and stay in you watchlist. But it alarms you when you go to a ebay or Paypal spoof site!!

Location: Eastern Ontario | I get those e-mails 10 times a day maybe 20. It is easy to see if it actually comes from Ebay or paypal. that is if the e-mail is addressed to you and not just dear member or you can scroll over the link and see if it directs you to paypal or ebay.
Once you have entered the copy site they now have youruser name and password and can use your ebay and paypal accounts. |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | its called phishing, treat every email from paypal and ebay as spam and forward the emails to [email protected] and [email protected] and then report them as spam to your isp.. here is a link from ebay about what to do and how to report: http://pages.ebay.com/education/spooftutorial/index.html I regularly receive emails alledgedly from paypal and ebay on one of my email accounts..oddly there is no ebay or paypal accounts registered with that email.... the more we all report these types of emails to paypal and ebay, the better those two will be able to try and prevent from happening in the future.... |
