Thought that subject might get your attention! (Sorry to re-post this - I just realized I'd accidentally posted it in the muskie research area and suspect many of you who can help me may not have seen this...) I'm making a very large novelty bucktail and am scavenging for component parts to put it together. I have a guy machining me an oversized brass body, but I'm not coming up with any ideas on large brass beads. I'm hoping the beads are 9/16" in dia or maybe a little larger. They can be nickel or brass or copper I suppose - anything that won't rust. Anyone have any ideas? Old steelies (from marbles) come to mind but, but not sure where to get them (and they'd probably rust). Anyone have any ideas?

Thx for your help,

D²

try posting your request here, you might find something. I put 'stainless steel beads' into Google (I was scared about what 'big brass balls' might Google up!) and came up with this and several other sites that offer 6 mm size, but you'll want twice that.
http://www.staminainc.com/beads/12mm_14mm.html - Stamina has them that big in plastic.

good luck, m

Try a Bead or Craft Shop. They have a cool assortment of beads for making Jewelry.

I may not have brass balls..............but I can make them.
I own a brass, bronze and alumimum foundry and we pour bronze castings up to 450 pounds.
Is that BIG enough?

hello. id say try a craft store. i find a lot of odd cool things there to tinker with .

michales , hobbylobby, franks ? if there is any still open, joanne fabricks. these places carry some cool lure craft toys if you take a look.

you may want to consider the wood beads they wont rust. just paint them up the way you want and then throw on an epoxy coating over them.

go to mcmastercarr.com and in their search engine, type in "brass balls" (i'm not kidding). they have brass ball bearings up to 3/4" diamteter. be sure to send a pic when you're "monster tail " is done. maybe shoot it next to a mepps and a large eagle tail for fun in comparison!

Thx for the great tips for finding large brass balls for beads for my oversized bucktail. I like the photo idea, too, and will share a photo of the finished product when it's ready. I'm making some good head-way on the big bucktail. It's looking like my novelty bucktail will be approx 20 inches long with just 2 "chunks" of hair. Hair length from the shaft is approx 8 inches! In comparison the overall length of a Mepps Giant Killer is approx 8 inches. A large Eagletail is 11 inches long.

At 20" long it might not be that "novelty". With bigger baits becoming more popular, that thing might be just the ticket. Don't be surprised after you get it done, if you get requests for more. I look forward to seeing it.

Ok, my big bucktail is done. I don't think you'll appreciate the size of this giant bucktail from the attached photo. (Sorry for the photo quality - it's just a pic I took from my mobile phone.) The overall length of this bucktail is approx 20 inches. It's got 14-O hooks on it. I've included a normal-sized orange and some coins and my hand in the photo for comparison. I'll share some more photos with other bucktails included so you can tell how big this thing is. For reference, a Mepps #5 is slightly smaller than the mega blade on this bucktail. Oh, I almost forgot. It's pretty heavy, too. Any guesses at how much it weighs? On Sat when I was picking up the hooks at Reinke Brothers, Bob weighed it at 13 oz!!!!! This is obviously not practical for casting. But it should look pretty good hanging on the wall! Should I bring it to the Milwaukee Swap this Saturday night?

That would be a great trolling bucktail. I don't think I've ever seen 14/0 hooks before. Very cool.

There once was a man from Hass
Whos balls were made of brass
In stormy weather, they'd clank together
and lightning shot out of his a$$

I forgot to mention that esox69's mcmastercarr.com suggestion was the ticket for finding the large (9/16-inch) brass balls I was looking for. Thx much for the great tip! This site proves that together we can do more than we can on our own. Thx everyone!

Yeah, bring it to the swap. I'd be intested in seeing it just for chucks. I'd wondering where you got the long black hair from? It's not a deertail is it? It almost looks artificial.

It's horse tail hair. I cut the hair to approx 8 inches long before wrapping/tying it onto the coil/shaft. I've been thinking about making this lure for quite a few years but had been hung up on the logistical issues surrounding the oversized components I'd need. Even the longest deer hair wasn't going to be long enough so I waited for something to present itself. Last fall I was at a Buckskinners encampment (Hartford, Sept. All the sights, smells, and tastes of an early 1800s fur trade rendezvous, including Indian tepees, period food and music, and demonstrations. (800) 826-4433.)) where I came across a guy selling (among other things) horse tails. The hair is coarse, stiff, and long, and it seemed like it would probably work well for my oversized lure... and it did.

Here's a little better photo of my giant bucktail along with a Mepps #5, a Giant Killer, and a large Eagletail for a size comparison. Now that's a big-un!!!

That's awesome. I'd cast it too. For a while. I still think it would be a great trolling bucktail. Or is it horsetail? Where did you find those hooks? Pat

Thx for your encouragement. I got those 14-O hooks at Reinke Brothers in Milwaukee (414-383-5591). I showed my big horse-tail at the Milwaukee muskie show this past weekend and turned lots of heads. I was really surprised at all the people that told me that it wasn't too big to fish with.
