Square off both ends, drill half way through, flip peice around and drill the other half from the other side. If done correctly...9 times out of 10 both holes match up. Make sure you go slow when drilling!!! Hope this helps.

Use a standard bit drill a pilot hole. Use a number of different (length) jobber's bits. If you're careful, no flipping of the bait will be necessary.

Nut has it right, but I've also seen it done on a wood lathe in connection with turning the globe body...you need a drill chuck attached to the lathe though. If interested, I can probably find the pictures.

I know this does not answer the question on drilling the wood but here goes. I was told to use a brad point bit to drill the wood but I could never get the hole to stay centered. I now take a 2"x2" square piece of wood and using a table saw I saw the wood in half lengthwise. I then run the blade of the table saw down in the table until it is sticking up about one sixteenth of an inch. I then run each piece of wood over the blade lengthwise leaving a groove in each piece of wood. I then glue the two pieces together, lining up the grooves I just cut. Clamp the wood together and let dry. Use the holes that are now in the ends of the 2x2 piece of wood as your centers for the lathe and start turning! I use Gorilla glue to glue the wood together. This method of cutting and gluing can take some time but it leaves a nice 1\8" hole to put your thru wire in.

I goop the snot out of it and yes I do put a small amount of water on it before applying the glue. You don't need a lot of water, just get the wood damp. The water raises the grain of the wood to give the glue better bite. If some of the glue gets into the groove you cut, just take that long 1\8" drill bit and run it through with your fingers. If you chuck the bit in the drill you run a greater risk of messing up the hole in the bait. Hope this helps.
