I wanted everyone to be aware of a high threat advisory on a known virus. This known virus goes by several names:
Worm_Grew.x
Nyxem
Blackworm
BlackMal
MyWife
CME-24
This virus is set to execute Feburary 3rd and then the 3rd of every month there after.
This virus is actually destructive and will delete and overwrite many common Windows file extenstions. (.DOC,.XLS, .EXE,.etc.)
It propagates itself using popular File Sharing programs (P2P) like Kazaa, etc., network shares and of course through email. The emails are the social engineering type that promise prictures, jokes or inappropriate content.
ODPS takes every effort to ensure our network is secure but when a virus like this is out, there are no guarentees. You are our eyes and ears. On Friday FEB. 3rd please pay close attention to your emails, your network drives and your computer. If you see anything out of sorts, please call the Help Desk, your Network Administrator, or me so we can look at what has you concerned.
Keep in mind that your home computing environment is at risk also. Make sure you have your virus protection up to date. Watch for odd emails and delete them if you see any. (do not open them)
All Anti-Virus manufacturers have advisories on this virus. All Anti-Virus manufacturers have suggestions on what to do to prepare for it. So what ever brand you use, please ensure it is up to date and you follow any advisories from the company that produces your anti-virus security.
