I have had more action using spinning gear but hate using spinning gear and don't feel like I have any control of a hooked fish. Went to a light baitcast/ bass rod and don't have the same feel for the lure. Any recommendations on a set up?

7' med/heavy 1/2-1 1/2 or 2.5 ounce rod
you want a reel with fast ratio, 6:2 gear ratio.
65lb power pro, or even 50, but i've lost some lures on backlashes with 50. 65 has yet to snap on a lash

use a straight 125 or even 174 single strand leader. no swivels, just a snapring or a string ease #4 or #5 staylock snap on the business end.

good luck!
oh, and u'll probably wanna get some 1ounce, 1.5 ounce and some 3/4 ounce traps or producer rattlers, or bucher pt rattlers.

go shallow, find the warm water, and rattle away. cover lots of water. remember, they may not always be feeding, just be where they're goin to be during the feeding window (shallow....less than 6ft, as shallow as you can get).

I have a St. Croix Premier Medium Heavy 6'6" rod with an Abu C3 5500 reel with 50 pound Spectron line for tossing small stuff like Rattlin' Shads. That combo works great.

I use the st croix 7'10" telescopic bass rod and either have a 200 calcutta or a curado on it. It is light enough to fish small baits such as rattle traps, but it also has a lot of power behind it and a big handle. For line I like to use 14 to 17lb for rattle traps and a 12" florcarbon leader 80lb. I perfer mono for smaller baits and 65 to 100lb braid for bigger baits.

I use a 7 ft MH bass rod. Rated to 1.5 oz, and a Quantum low profiile high speed bass reel. 65lb braid, and a 8 or 10 inch, 100lb mono leader. I only throw 3/4's and 1 oz's though. A few 1/2 oz's early, on pressured waters.

dude, not having 'control of a hooked fish' is half the fun. Let them play you. m

Mikie,
I am a spaz and need all the help I can get. I make Gillespie look like Tony Dean. Thanks very much guys. The high speed reel and leader suggestions are especially helpful.

I use a Loomis MBR785 in GL3 for throwing Rattln Shads. It's a heavy 6 ft 6 in rod rated for 1.5 oz lures. I couple the rod with a Curado 201 BSF spooled with 50 lb Cortland Spectron. Work well for me.

Dude, me, too! Mid-sized muskies on lighter tackle are a real challenge, but a real thrill, too.
One trick I learned is to get the rattle bait traveling towards you as it enters the water (spinning outfits are great for that), keeps your 'traps outta the muck in the shallows. good luck! m

hello. i use a 71/2' med with a calcutta 250 with 30lb power pro and have no problems . the rod however was custom built for throwing light tackle. some of you may have seen it at the chicago show if you visited the dadsons custom rod booth it was there with a callcuta 250te dc on it . also i like as a back up the g.loomis creature series rods they work reel well on smaller baits and handle the bruisers well. good luck.

I use 60 pound flouro leaders for the small stuff with 50 pound Spectron or Power Pro

Of late, I've been using a 50 lb Tyger leader tied directly to the line, 50 lb Cortland Spectron, and to the split ring on the Trap. Previously, I've used 124 lb solid wire with no snaps or swivels.
