I'm in the market for new electronics in my boat. Looking for a unit for the console and a unit for the bow. The unit for the console I want to be a dual sonar and GPS unit.

I've been looking around and the color units "look" really nice. But is that it? Just looks?

What are the Pros and advantages of color vs. the Black & White units?

What will the color units tell me that the B/W units won't?

Are the color units just a fad or a status symbol to have bragging rights that you have color display in your boat?

I just don't know if I can justify the expense for color if there are no real, significant adavantages over the B/W models that have helped people to catching fish for years.

- Pros/Cons of B/W?

- Pros/Cons of color? (other than the cost obviously)

Thanx

One of the biggest Pro's of the color over the b/w is viewing the unit in sunlight. The walleye boards have this topic covered pretty well...just do a search on walleyefirst or walleyecentral....

Also on bigger fish...muskies!...the graph will show a fish with yellow/red on the top of the arch rather than just black and white. If you do go with color make sure you get one with the higher pixel strength. If you get the lower one it will be harder to see in the sunlight.

i have a color lowrance and love it, i bought a color garmin for my bow that i need to get installed, the biggest thing ive noticed is the ability to read it in the daylight! and direct sun. as far as the clor definition it depends on the model and mode your in as to what colors the fish or structure will show in.

u'll also be able to identify hard and soft bottom easier with a little fiddling and experience.

i love my x67 on the bow.

i might grab another one for my little boat.

Yes, the bottom contents shows up quite well. I have the lcx104c on my console. I guide from the back of my boat and the larger screen is easily visible. Rocks show up bright yellow, sand shows up red/yellow, and muck is a purple. I didn't have to adjust anything but that might not be the same for all models/makes.

I was in a few rangers this year that had this basic setup....it's pricey but it's top notch
332 c and 102c, 2 up front..2 in the console...
Lowrance now makes a 339c that has the gps antenna in the unit so that would be the perfect unit for the bow..go with a 332 c in the back with the regular gps antenna mounted back by the motor....

They worked great and were easy to read...

I like to have seperate units as well when using a standard size locator, but when you go to the big screen Lowrances like the 110 and 111 even when you split the screen each screen is bigger than the standard 332. One correction on C Nelson's post: the new 102, 332, 334's have more pixels than the older 100 and 330's.

my plan right now is to mount my Bottomline and hand-held garmin in the back by the tiller, so i need a basic depthfinder up front, and would like a gps with a big enough image size to be usable while standing and casting.

how does the x67c compare to the 100c? the x67c is smaller (3.5" vs 5" diagonal) but they're both 320x240 pixels with the 67 being 256color and the 100c being 1/4 VGA.
is it worth spending the extra $80 to get the slightly wider screen and higher color?

is the difference between the 3500 and the 3600 just the built in gps antenna? (they're the same price)
is there a loss of precision with it built in versus a separate puck antenna?
the 3600 seems appealing in a tiller boat...put a mount and power leads up front and in the back and move it depending if you're casting or trolling? use it in the truck as well?

Actually I thought of mounting two 111's on the dash and 2 of them on the bow. Add to that a Garmin chart plotter with doppler radar and I think I wil be set! At least for this year!

I was looking into getting the X-102c. I need a unit for deep water fishing, catfish fishing. Structure and if at all possible, being able to locate the bigger cats sitting on the bottom. I know this may be far fetched though, but I figure I would ask. So with the pixel strength that the 102 has, do you think it will be a good unit for me ? Also, what about trolling, I do alot of trolling too. I guess that may or may not make alot of difference. I already have a Lowrance 4800 GPS Chartplotter at the helm, so I just need the graph now. Anyone have any experience with the Humminbird side-scanning units ? Any input is greatly appreciated. thanks guys
