Was curious to see what other people like, and why, when replacing or upgrading treble hooks. I am a fan of 4X. I also like short shank wide gap hooks.

I like a variety of hooks, but like you I too have a tendancy to go for the Mustad 3 and 4X wide bends when I can. I use those on mose of my diving plugs, and slow moving topwaters. I like the vmc x-strongs(blue box) for most other applications. I like the round bend long shanks VMC's(like the Topraider hooks) in situations where I take a lure with three hooks and and take off the middle one, adding the longer shank hook to the front(I do this on 6 and 8" Jakes, and 8" Bobbies). For bucktail hook replacement, i usually go with the Mustad wide bends.

I prefer the 3/0 Mustad Round Bends.... and for some of the smaller lures I like the 2/0. The wide gaps and thin wire really stick the fish.

I am a big fan of replacing hooks. I keep a good supply of 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 so I can
change out hooks easily.

I like to measure up the hooks to the bait. I go as big as possible without changing the action of the bait too badly and causing hook foul ups.

I my eyes the bigger the hooks the better percentages, normally. As long as the lure works right I'm happy. Normally, I use VMC hooks. They seem to be the best that I've used.

Whenever I go fishing I take along a selection of 1/0,2/0 and 3/0 round bend Mustads. I prefer to cut any hooks that I can instead of ripping them out. I've never seen the need for the 4x strong hooks. They are hard to cut and I beleive that they are harder to sharpen and don't penetrate as easily as a thinner diameter hook. I've never straightened out any of the Mustads and I think that they are more than adequate for the job.

I like the Mustad round bend short shank light wire hooks. (hook #35647)
Im not a big fan of the 4x strong hooks. I think there a over kill and you don't get as good of penitration as with a light wire hook. On the down side of the light wire hooks, you'll need to sharpen them and replace them more often but the trade off is you'll get better hook sets.
