Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Keep it in the net

Something I would like to see and I hope you all tell your friends is to keep the muskies in the net while unhooking. I see so many muskies doing the krappie flop on the bottom of the boat. This is not good for them at all. Take your time, get your tools out, get your camera out and then pull the fish out AFTER you have unhooked him. A big Beckman net serves as a good tool to keep the muskie calm boatside. I have a 10 second rule after the fish is out.. thats all the time in the world you need to take a quick photo.

Lets all have a fun and safe season on our muskies.[]

Gotta agree with you Jason. Especially if you fish alone like I do lots of times.
If I net a fish, the first thing that I do is cut the line and get the rod out of the way. Then with the fish still in the net I start cutting and removing hooks. If I want to get a pic, I'll hoist it up for a quick one if I'm with someone or if I'm alone, I'll slide it into the livewell, set up the camera, pull the fish out of the well, press the auto button on the camera and in 10 seconds, I'm back in position with the fish, the picture is taken automaticly, and then it's back in the water. Out of the water for 10 seconds....that's it. The two keys for me are...cutting the line and getting the rod out of the way. Having all my hook removal tools right where I need them, easily accesible, so the work can take place swiftly.
Like a good pit crew.

Couldn't agree with you more Jason. It's crucial to leave the net in the water until all hooks are removed and everything is in place until the fish is lifted out of the net. That's why the big oversize nets that Frabill and Beckman have been making are really fish friendly. They're a great holding pen, or act as a live well until everything is in order for a picture. Once you or your buddy gets a good Leech Lake Lip lock on the momma take a few quick pictures and put her back in the drink. Always anticipate the shake, and if she's coiling up and becoming sassy hold her over the net and water. Nothing will make you feel more terrible than dropping a fish by its nogging. Especially if it's a big ole gator that could raise holy hell in the boat.

Heck I know one thing that's as bad as the krappie flop in the boat, and that's one trying to take a leak when a wave hits the boat unexpectadely. Let's just say hopefully nobody gets wet...by the wave that is.

catch ya later,
Krappie

Right on Jason. I couldn't agree more. I see far too many guys with 25,000 rigs and boxes full of expensive stuff, and a walleye net, and cheap(or no) pliers. I wrote an article a couple years ago talking about release tactics and fish handling, and was planning on sending it in to the local paper here(The Daily Tribune in Wisconsin Rapids), just never sent it in. I'd like to get it out there somehow.

Jason,

Can't agree with you more on this and related threads... I will be speaking on this very subject.."Proper fish handling, fisherman and fish safety" at Eau Claire Musky Clinic in April.

Good info for all as I I think we all have wittnessed too much of the improper stuff. What continues to amaze me is the magazines that promote CPR and then continue to print many photo's of fish being held verticle, etc. and don't mention it... Think I'm kidding check out the last two issues of MH and cound verticle holds vs horizontal.

I agree with Jason too!! I use the giant Frabill, and have no problems working with a muskie there. I have a set of tools that stays out in the boat at all times, and can safely get at a hook as far as 12" down the maw.[:sun:]

Good advice. I too do not like to see fish flopped on the floor of the boat. Leaving the fish in its environment is the only way to go. The fish settles down after the initial shock of being netted. Have your release tools in one area and go to work. One question on the live well release. I have never placed a fish in a live well. Do you have trouble getting them out, do they go nuts after resting for a while. I don't have a 50 inch live well, the head of the fish will not be easy to get at in my boat. I know buy a Tuffy. Good advice Jason this type of dialogue is what message boards need to include.

Good luck, Murph!

Don't you think it is fish handling in genral?you see alot of guys that don't know how to hold a fish either, when they do get them out of the net.try this.when you pull the fish out of the water hold your breath, when you have to take a gasp of air put him back in the water.
