Location: Monee, Illinois | I am going to be fishing my golf course pond on Friday with a buddy of mine (John WhiteSox B) and just thought about ice fishing for musky on some of the Indy lakes. I know they are trying to catch pike on these lakes does anyone fish for musky like this. Just wondering some thoughts since Illinois and Indy do not have season for musky.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | A regular quick strike rig on a Tip Up will work, but you'll need to rig the tip up so the sucker can't trip the flag too easily. Get to the flag and set the hook immediately, and you should do just fine. |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | To get the sucker to NOT tip the flag too much is cut off a bit of their tail... They can wiggle all they want, but cannot pull line..

Location: north central wisconsin | Some of the new tipups have screws to adjust the tension of the spool, which would help keep the sucker from popping it. Some people put a bread tie on a beaver dam with a very light twist, that only a fish could release too, and that works. |

If I were you guys, I'd get Frabill Big Game tip-ups. We use them for monster Pike on Zipple Bay, LOTWs...they are perfect for large fish. I'd use 60-80lb fluro to make a rig with 2 trebels, sucker minnows or redtailed chubs.

Location: Monee, Illinois | Hey didnt tell me about it, i was just thinking about it when we talked about going Ice fishing tomorrow and we talked about the big pike in my summer home private lake. I was not even going to go with John I was just goingt to learn how to ice fish and by some stuff and give it a try........I am sure he or I or whoever were not the first ones to think about this and I am sure some people are doing it. I think it could be fun unless I am hurting the fishery by doing this...

You should talk to your buddy Duke about using large bait on tipups....and keeping the flag from constantly tripping.
He buys small rubber O-rings and slides them on the horizontal "T" part of the tipup shaft where the flag pole rests. Then you just put the flag between the O-ring and the main vertical shaft. The slight friction from the rubber O-ring keeps amazingly large suckers (10-13") from tripping the flag, but it's not enough friction so a muskie/pike would ever notice. He showed me this little trick when we were pike fishing in NE Indiana....slickest thing I've ever seen.
This way, you don't need to remove the tails, you don't need the shaft tension unnecessarily tight, and you also don't need to bring bread ties along. Just "install," fish and forget about it.
