Can anyone help me with getting started making spinnerbaits?? What do I need, where do I get components, any secrets to the process, etc.

I'm making real hair, no silicone for now. I want to build very high quality lures, built like tanks (mostly used for high speed trolling). No one seems to make what I want. I had a guy make me a batch, and they are killer, but he doesn't want to make any more.

Perhaps, I'll make enough to sell as well. I got some time on my hands this winter.

Try www.staminainc.com

Click on online store. They carry muskie spinner heads and all kinds of dressings.

Steve,

I'd ask the guy who made them for you. Most anyone is willing to share information and show others how to make spinner baits. He probably will even tell you where he buys his parts.

Since you have spinner's you like, you have the size of wire, head, bend, etc. to copy from.

www.tacklemaking.com has a section on "making wire baits". Their discussion boards should help you also.

Make sure you get tough thread to make your spinner baits. I've made the mistake before of using weak thread and had it break.

Let me know if you still need more info.

Muskie Bob,

I just found that website about an hour ago.

Well, I'd ask these guys who made the spinnerbaits, but they don't really speak english and are hard to get a hold of.....so I'm gonna do my best to try to copy what they've done for me already.

I think it will be fun to make them, get creative, and see where it leads me.

Check http://www.tackleunderground.com/board/ for info. You can find components at http://www.mooreslures.com/ (you'll have to get their catalog) I make spinnerbaits and I buy the head already poured, so all I use is a couple of pliers and some spray paint or airbrush. I use rubber skirts so I can't help you on the hair.

Steve, sounds like what you need is a jig mold so you can pour your own and use big wire like .062 or bigger, You may want to go that route. The websites listed above should have molds. Good to see you got out on the water, stick a big girl before the year is out.

Keith uses his own molds, and wire at whatever thickness he wants for his Violent Strike lures. If the wire doesn't fit in the mold, he uses a Dremel tool to fix that.

Thread - best stuff is nylon upholstery thread, lots of head cement or epoxy and you are golden.

Steve I have been making spinnerbaits for a little over a year now and buy my un-painted bodies from Stamina or on eBay. I use the tough powder paint applied with a badger air brush. I also twist the thread (Gudebrod size D) someone else mentioned to use a tough thread for wrapping a very very good point. Also i use a Sally Hanson clear fingernail polish for sealing the thread as I go along and 3+ coates to seal it in the end of the wrap, cause bald baits don't catch fish. If you wish PM or e-mail me for more info I would be happy to help you.
