Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Abu Garcia Handles?

Is it worthwhile to replace Abu Garcia handles with larger ones to get a little more crankability? If so, does Abu Garcia make them, or is there another brand that will work? Thanks.

Otter,

I have power handles on all my Abu's. I got them from Reeds www.reedssports.com or you can get them directly from Abu.

It is definetly worth it to replace the abu handles. I use gator grips, you can get them at http://www.muskyshop.com/

I have the Power Handle also on one of my 6500C3 and I really like it. The oversized handle and bigger crank arm is very comfortable when cranking hard pulling cranks. I had ordered my directly from Garcia and their customer service is outstanding. I also have Gator Grips on my other Garcia's and they are nice also. The Gator Grips are also cheaper than the Powerhandle, and are still much better than the handles that come with the Garcia's. In fact, the handles that are originally placed on the Abu Garcia's are junk in my opinion. I've had more than my share of handles pull off when setting the hook or ripping the bait from weeds. You can argue that I shouldn't be pulling on the handle during a hookset or jerk, but some bad habits are tough to overcome. Plus, when I'm jacking some jaw everything is going to get jerked around and it better hold up. The only thing I should be worried about is that fish on the other end.

catch ya later,
Krappie

I haven't found a good replacement yet for the ABU handles. I do not like the single paddle design of the Power Handle. Gator Grips are not any "stronger" and the paddles are pretty delicate. I just keep replacing the "stock" handles on my ABU's.... which is a big pain. I cannot believe that they can't afford to put stainless steel handle on a high end product such as the Morrum. In my opinion, that is the reason I favor the Calcutta over the Morrum. You can't beat the sturdy stainless handle on the Shimano products.

Put a Shimano handle on an ABU reel... and you are approaching perfection.

As always, just my humble opinion.

I have had Gator Grips on every musky rig I owned. I haven't had a problem with any of them. As for strength, I don't buy the Gators for strength, I buy them for the comfort. The rubber on the paddle is softer and a little easier on the fingers. Besides, I haven't had a paddle pull off the Gator yet. The last new 6500 I bought I tried, and pulled the paddle off at least a dozen times, for less than a week before switching back to the Gators. My suggestion is to go with the Gator Grips.

I put the gator handle on my C4 and find it makes a world of difference. Bought mine from Rollie and Helen's. I'm surprised no one mentioned that you may need to replace the nut on your reel holding it on, depending on the reel's age. If you tell them which reel it is and how old, they will know what to send you.
