Subject: Reel Fix Needed

I have an abu 6500 big-game reel (5.3:1) with an unusual problem. The reel is one made during the first year or two when the reels came out.
Hoping there is an easy fix and looking for some advice.
The reel has been disassembled & lubed often using reel oil not grease except where specified and sparingly.
The problem is that when the drag is tightened down, there is greatly increased pressure on the retrieve somehow; it becomes VERY difficult to retrieve a lure. To the point where I switch to another reel as the situation is just way too wrong. With the tight drag, the spool seems to be affected on the cast also, the spool will not play out as easily. I can see this by pushing the cast button and trying to get the reel spinning by hand.
If I recall correctly, there is a screw on the "axle" under the handle which when loosened eases the problem somewhat. I am not sure if this is what I should be doing though.
This happened from the time the reel was new and I should have returned it but thought that just tinkering would help the situation. Not a wise move.
Reel seems built like a tank except for this problem.
Any suggestions?

Send it in to Sportsman's repair at 1007 Pasha ave. Mosinee Wi. 54455. Chuck is THE expert on those type of reels. He is a first rate guy too.

It sounds like either the "stack" of washers under the star drag is assembled wrong or one of the washers is missing.

Take the handle and star wheel off and take the washers out, there should be two washers that are bent slightly. Re-assemble the reel with the washers opposing each other. This may very well be all that is required.

If this doesn't fix the problem I would send it back to ABU and let them take a look at it. If you send it out on a Monday you should have it back to fish by the weekend.

Raider, I must disagree with you on this one. THE experts are the factory techs. OldGuy, do what reelman says and send it back to the factory.

I think it is solved.
The two bent washers were opposed but I re-installed them opposed but in the opposite direction. The lowest part of the "curve" being closest to the shaft in the first washer nearest the spool ...and the other washer the opposite way; that is the one nearest the handle
Then I adjusted both cast control knobs and loosened the handle retaining nut just a bit. That helped too
On a test retrieve under tension it seemed to reel in much easier.
I guess it was a case of there being too much pressure exerted on the "axle" somehow.
Many thanks for all the suggestions.
You guys are wizards!
