Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I use very sophisticated equipment. A needle nose plier, and linesmans pliers. Make the loop by forming it around the needle nose center of the tip, then square it off so the tag end is perpendicular to the shaft. Grip the loop with the needle nose or any other plier, and wrap the loops neatly with the linesmans pliers. Trim, and I'm done.

Posts: 224 Location: Madison | You can buy "looping pliers" that are specifically designed to form loops in wire (Thanks to Muskie Nut for that info and your demonstration on making leaders.) I wasn't able to find looping pliers locally, but I picked up a pair on Amazon last year, and am very happy with them. -d

Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | For those of you who do make their own, how lightweight or thin diameter of material can you get away with before you start having problems with excessive predisposition to kinking, etc. I have some really thin stainless steel stuff I used to use for fish tags that may have some application for lighter lures. Posts: 224 Location: Madison | lardonastick - 10/6/2005 2:13 PM I use 174#, .029 diameter. I haven't tried anything thinner. I use the same. A fishing partner who started using my leaders this year was amazed at how thin they are, yet will not bend easily like some commercial leaders. I'm assuming LOAS uses the same material (American Fishing Wire) that I do. -d

Posts: 158 Location: Eagan, MN | I use a lot lighter wire than most, even w/ big baits, I think it's around 108lbs, and I've gone even lighter than that w/ no problems but no real advantages either. Regards, Phil.

Posts: 194 Location: Southwest PA | I used to bend the wire around a nail that was partially nailed into a board with the head cut off, then I broke down and bought a pair of round bend pliers. The pliers made it quicker and easier to make leaders. Well worth the couple dollars. As for the wire, I use 218# test that is .033 dia. For me it seems with the heavier wire jerk baits and glide baits work better because the leader doesnt flex as much. I've tried heavier wire but then it gets rough on the fingers. Rich W
