With my steadily worsening back, I've been throwing hair and spinnerbaits more, and the big wood/plastic less this year, but now fall is coming. When do you all lose faith in the fur, and figure the fish want the jerkbaits, crankbaits, and twitchbaits that are the usual fall fare?

Exactly as the other two said, never too late. I had some of my bigger fish of the season eat spinnerbaits in november last year on the lakes here in WI. I never threw spinnerbaits after turnover till last season either. Won't ever make that mistake again.

Keep throwing that blade bait until you can't get through the top of the water.

Topwaters, bucktails, and spinnerbaits work all season long so just keep tossing them

I've seen big fish caught from deep water lakes in November on hair.
Fish will eat if they are hungry, and they will eat hair if you put it in front of them.
Welcome to the "Looking for something easy on my back" lure selection process.
Along with the hair, I've spent more time throwing short billed cranks in the fall.
I'll spend a fair amount of time tossing 8" jointed Believers, they produce until freeze up and are a back friendly option.
There are some back friendly gliders out there, that is gliders in excess of 7" that don't weigh a ton and can be worked easily. You might want to take a break from chunkin' and windin' and use something with some pauses in the retrieve along with less resistance.
I'll attach a pic of some 'Big Heads' that I made just for those reasons.
The Big Heads are the 3 on the top. The one on the bottom is the Perka.
2 new lures that I'll be producing as fast as I can so they can be getting wet before and after turnover.
