Spent yesterday up the road about an hour fishing a small terminal spawning stream full of salmon. Were looking primarily for rainbow trout although a few salmon were hooked also. The big king was a hoot on the flyrod. There are some advantages to living in Alaska....unfortunately there are no musky.

I made one trip to AK and hope to make it back someday. What an awesome place!

Yea that's just terrible that you have to catch all those trout and salmon and not be able to catch a musky, poor guy. Strange to see a king and a chum so dark, they don't look like that around here until November. Great pics of the rainbows, wow!

Steve....anytime...just let me know. I got a complete basement...has it's own bedroom, shower, workout room and a 65" tv with BOSE surround sound. We like to "rough it" here in Alaska.

As far as the salmon being colored some of the kings are already spawned out and dead. Makes the trip interesting cause the carcasses usually bring the brownies too (bears). Fortunately they are usually interested in eating the dead fish not the quasi-living fisherman. Miss the skis though....definitely have to get out for them next season. BTW...this area is about a 5 minute walk in from some houses....oops....maybe that is rubbing it in...sorry.

look at the colors on the Brown! nice fish.
That is a beauty sized Dolly Varden. We had some smaller ones for breakfast one morning over the fire..Yum!

Alaska is so cool. We had a momma Moose and two baby meese walk past our camp within 20 feet. Only had to dodge one bear on the river. One of my buddies caught a fillet-and-release. They fillet out the salmon right on the river up there and throw the entrails back into the river. My brother in law snagged a head/spine/tail (no meat) and started whooping that he had a fish on. He will never live it down.

I'd give up the mighty Muskie to live in Alaska. There is always trips.

Have to chuckle at the "filletless" fish story as that happens all the time. I do it at least once a year. They want you to throw all the remains back in the water as it breaks down quickly and is the natural order of things. You can't believe the stench at some river mouths where the carcasses buildup. But come back in a few weeks and nature has desposed of them all. Also carcasses on the shore can attract some rather large, generally, unwanted brown haired friends.

It's funny you mention you'd give up musky to live here in Alaska. This is my second stint here...my first being in the military from 92' to 96'...have been back since '02. I'm not sure given the circumstances again, I would move back up here. I miss Montana....ease of access to fishing was much better....so many things. When you live here you find that wherever there is a road system there are generally LOTS of fisherman. The pics above being an exception. Unless you fly or have the money to fly in places it is mostly quite crowded fishing. I just spent a couple of weeks back in Montana and only ran into a few people while doing great fishing.......that was a great colored brown too.

Anyway....just a comment,
