Subject: Minn Kota problem??

Actually, I am having 2 problems with the new 55lb PowerDrive with Auto Pilot I installed on my boat this winter.

Problem #1- I have to practically get down on my knees so I don't fall in the drink and wrestle the motor to get it to deploy! The shaft just will not slide smoothly once I pull the grip glide clear. It is rediculous! Any help here would be great.

Problem#2 The auto pilot works great! About 60% of the time. The other 40%, I activate it and it looks like it is searching for a heading, it just moves left to right quickly like it is searching for something. I know I mounted it level on the deck because I have checked it muliple times. The binstructions say that other electronics can interfere. Could my fish finder interfere sometimes?

Any help on one or both of these problems would be great. Thanks Guys, Tom Tarasiuk

I have a power drive, and can certainly identify with the deployment thing. I like the fact that it holds the motor securely, but #*^@! I beat myself up trying to get the thing deployed. I do love the motor though.

The more you use it, the easier it deploys... just a matter of time. If you want to, you can deploy it, latch it, deploy it, latch it, in your drive way for about a half hour... then it will be golden, but not Andrew Golden.

Auto pilot problem... that sounds about normal.

Same problem [mine is pretty new]... looks like I'm humping the front of my boat on the first deploy of the day [and I am in need of a nap afterwards ;]

It is getting easier though....

If it starts jumping around just tap the pedal left or right and it should line up again. If it happens a ton take it in and get it calibrated. If it's under warranty, 1 year, this should be free. Teflon spray will help lubricate it a bit until it gets worn enough to go down easy.

Mine has been fine except that once in awhile on my first deploy, and I turn it to the left, it will keep turning all the way around till I hit the pedal again(this not being in the auto mode). Wierd.

Musky Tom-

Marine 1 is right on. I coat the shaft with some teflon lubricant. As for it spinning, there could be a couple of reasons.
1. Check that your batteries are putting out the required voltage.
2. Check your connections at the battery, plug, and remove the panel in the bow and check the wires for the plug receptacle.
3. Check how level the boat sits in the water. Just becasue you had a level bow on the trailer doesnt mean the boat sits that way in the water. Might need to adjust.
4. It might need to be re-calibrated.

I went through the same steps here on my auto pilits. 1 year is was a loose wire, 1 year I had a bad batt.

Hi Tom,

I would check and make sure the trolling is mounted as level as possible. If its not use rubber washers to get it where you want it. Also make sure your foot pedal is clean, if you unhook it and wash it out in the lake check the AP again.

Thanks

Musky Tom,

I carry a can of WD-40 to spray on the shaft of my autopilot when it gets tough to deploy. It works great. My AP has been a really good unit but once in a great while it will act like it is possessed. Once I give it a new heading, it's OK. I agree with the others, make sure it is level first and then check to have it recalibrated. I love my AP and couldn't imagine being without it.

Thanks guys for all the help. I really appreciate it. I thought of spraying the shaft but, I thought maybe there was something more seriously wrong with the shaft. I look like 2 monkeys $#&$ing a football trying to deploy this thing! I will also check my connections. The battery is new. Thanks again guys. Later, Tom
