Take off the tire and you'll see a screw that needs an allen key to unscrew. It's on the hub. Take the screw out, allow the oil to drain, and re-fill with 50 weight oil....I believe it's 50 weight. Hopefully someone else can confirm for you. That's what I used. Piece of cake!

Yes, 50 wt, make sure it is non-synthetic though. You will need a way to get oil back into the small drain/fill hole, a oil squirt can with small tip works good.

Hi: I think 1 quart for each wheel will be PLENTY. I bought a large syringe for filling the hubs on my trailer. It takes time to get them filled. Good Luck!

I just changed the oil in one of my COOL hubs last night. How the heck do you get ALL the air out when you fill 'em back up?

It drains pretty fast... but man it takes a long time to fill.

Tips would be appreciated before I do the next one. Thanks.

Looks like I didn't get a good seal on the hub... as after one trip to the lake my oil is milky white.

Does anyone have any tips for getting a good seal on the hub to avoid moisture issues? Can air turn the oil milky.... as I know there was one small air bubble still in the bearing that I couldn't get out for the life of me... so left it.

Any help would be appreciate before I tear the #*^@ thing apart again. Thanks.

Jason,

Did you change seals? If so, I suggest you put a little oil on the seal, and the spindle to lube them. Just like you would an oil filter gasket.

Shep, thanks for the tip.

First... I didn't use the O-Ring properly as there was NOT one when I removed the oil bath cap so wasn't sure where to put the stupid thing. Also, considering the damage to my spindle from a mishap a few years ago... lubing up the spindle is a good idea.

Not sure when I'll get to this project again.... but it will definitely be done before my trip to LOTW.

Jlong: I tore my hubs apart this winter for some PM. I ordered new seals and O rings from Ranger. I'm pretty sure the seals are double lips. Put a little oil on the O rings and the seals before assembly. I think I took some photos, I could e-mail to you.

681,
What are the seals? Are those the metal rings/washers on the oustide of the bearings?

I'd love to see the pics if you have them.

All I have right now are the O-Rings to replace.

Seals are on the trailer side of the hub. The are press fit into the hub, and provide the seal to the spindle. I always replace the seals when I pack my bearings. Even with my new trailer, I pack every year, and replace the seals. Get the double lip/heavy duty seals. You can get seal removal/replacement tools at Sears. I just pry out with a big screwdriver, and tap the new seals in place with a hammer.

Also, Jason, I'm not so sore you want to fill the hubs full of oil. Therefore, getting all the air out is not an issue. Seems to me, all the new Ranger trailers I look at have the level a bit over half in the window. I will check with Frank, the Ranger Tourney Trailer guy.

Shep... I called and talked to the guys at Ranger about my COOL hubs. They recently changed the design of them and they no longer use O-Rings and only need to be filled half-way with oil. My "older" 2001 Cool Hubs are still best run full... and use O-Rings on the oil bath cap.

I'm planning on just taking mine apart to put the O-Ring on... and crossing my fingers that is the only problem. If there are seal issues... I'll need "professional" help (ha ha) with that.

Now I just need to find some time.... and NOT at the expense of my fishing time (heh heh).

Jason,

You get the seals, and the Bud Light, and I'll come over and learn you on how to change them.

Pamps in Green Bay should have the gooder ones, if you can't find them here.

For all you guys that know me as a MGD guy, well that is a thing of the past. I need to drink low carb beer, and I never did like Miller Lite. So now I am a Bud Light kinda guy. It almost tastes like beer.
