Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | The WI DNR Web page has been updated to include meeting minutes and next steps for the muskie committee. Documents describing the Genetics study as well as the Leech Lake study are available here. Good place to get info on what the state is doing, planning for the WI muskie fishery. http://dnr.wi.gov/org/water/fhp/fish/musky/muskymanteam.html Cory Edited by C.Painter 8/31/2005 8:55 AM

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Thanks for the update, Mr. Painter. You have been very active and worked hard to improve the muskie fishery here in Wisconsin, it's appreciated. Please keep us up to speed as to future developments.

Location: The Yahara Chain | Thanks for the info, Cory. Good to see that the DNR is letting the public know what is going on. It sounds like they have a sound plan. Keep up the good work.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Thanks man!! I really wish I could have attended the meeting but, having vacation during the day of the meeting, I could not. In talking to others involved, I am glad Petenwell was brought up as a study water. It is great to see that the surplus fish will be coming there. Even though it probably will not be huge numbers per a 23,000 acre flowage, anything above what our club can afford(we will be stocking it with $3,000 worth of Upper Mississippi strain this fall) will be greatly appreciated. Please keep us updated as new information becomes available.

Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | Great news for the Pete! The first year may be rough as the hatcheries figure out how to raise these spots...but I have a feeling once they get it down the Pete will be getting a decent share of fish. Great news for Lake Wissota as well. We will be dumping 700 of the spots into monona the first week of Nov this year.....with 700 WI strain as well...let the studies begin! Cory

Folks, I had the opportunity to attend the latest Statewide Muskie committee meeting, as well as the latest NRB meeting in Spooner. I'll try and find some time to give a full update soon. Personally, I'd like to see them do a lot more a lot faster, but they are moving. It just won't be at a pace that helps the the age 35 plus people in our lifetimes. Most importantly they are going to try and get out of Bone lake as a brood lake for many of the reasons that have been discussed on this website over the past year. It's my opinion that the findings of the committee and the feelings of the people are not being communicated to the higher ups of the DNR, NRB and state govenment, which is why I attended the NRB meeting and make my thoughts known to Scott Hassett and the rest of the NRB. It is shaping up to be another interesting winter, one that will likely determine whether we will see any significant changes in Muskie management in this state during the next 10 years. Why is this year so important? It's an election year - the right people will be listening, and the message will get delivered. Highlight of the Muskie committee meeting: I am very impressed with geneticist Brian Sloss, he will be the cornerstone of the new genetics program. He will tell it like it is and won't support some of the mindless DNR policies of the past. Watching some members of the DNR go to battle for the wishes of the local Muskie clubs in support of stocking MS strain fish. We have some truly outstanding people in the DNR who are approaching this with an open mind. Seeing that the phase out of Bone lake as our brood lake is going to happen, despite what some of the DNR "experts" had to say last winter and spring. Finally - a kudos to the WDNR for accurately representing what went on at the meeting on their website. I'd likely have worded some things differently(obvious to most of you) but the site exceeded my expectations. Lowlights: watching some members of the DNR throw out every conceivable roadblock to derail the stocking of MS strain muskies in any lake in the state. Seeing that there will be less than 1000 MS strain muskies stocked this coming year. Seeing there will be no plan for a MS strain brood lake for 10 years, including refusing to restarting the stocking of Nancy lake to create a brood lake. Seeing that there will be no plan to create any MS strain Muskie lakes in the NW part of the state, only a minor study consisting of two staggered stockings in 8 lakes in the NW part of the state. The entire St. Croix drainage Muskie fishery has been created using a bad brood stock lake consisting of fish that do not grow or reproduce. The entire drainage should be overstocked immediately with proven high quality fish. Seeing that the DNR is not going to create any Geat Lakes strain fisheries in the NW part of the state, despite numerous areas that make sense. One question: if we are doing a growth study - why are we not including the Great lakes strain? and finally, the Northwest area of the state continues to see an exodus of muskie fisherman despite the high gas prices. Rumor is that two more of NW Wisconsin's best guides are moving to Minnesota and taking their clients, lodging, food and gas dollars with them. People over here are taking notice more than ever before. I've got much, much more to update you all with. Likely that will happen on a regular basis about the time the lakes start to freeze over. I wanted to clarify one item on my above post. Where I stated I'd be disappointed that there would be "less than 1000 MS strain muskies stocked this coming year. " It should have read: less than 1000 MS strain muskies stocked by the WDNR in NW Wisconsin in 2006. (None in 2005) There is a lot of work being done by local Muskie clubs to stock MS strain Muskies on their own, and hopefully those number will greatly exceed 1000 statewide. Unfortunately Muskie clubs in NW Wisconsin are not being allowed to stock lakes North of Lake Wissota. We all appreciate the work of these Muskie clubs across the state in improving our fisheries and wanted to make sure I acknowlege their efforts. My previous post did not acknowlege that. Thanks again, Bob Benson

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Interesting that the same scientist your group openly and vehemently attacked and in fact even suggested was only moving on this issue to 'keep his job' now impresses you. I tried to tell you, sir. I'm sure everyone here is very familiar at this point with your feelings on the issues. It's probably also clear by now that many don't share your point of view. We ask that you restrict your muskie stocking comments to the Research Board, and to PLEASE be more careful not to attack anyone on ANY MuskieFIRST board.

Location: The Yahara Chain | Scot Stewart, southcentral WI area fisheries manager, was the speaker at our club meeting (CCMI) last night. Starting in 2006 the WDNR will be stocking 1985 LL fish along with 1985 WI strain (Bone Lake) into Lake Monona. Our club is putting in 700 LL fish this fall, to get the ball rolling. The eggs will be supplied by the Minnesota DNR starting in 2006. We are purchasing our fish from a Minnesota farm this fall. All LL fish will be finclipped on the left, WI strain on the right. An equal number of fish of both strains will receive pit tags starting next year. I asked about stocking Nancy, to boost the population so it could be used as a brood lake. The answer given was that Nancy would not be stocked due to oppostion by the Nancy lake assoiciation. Bob maybe you could direct some of your energy towards those folks. If they changed their tune Nancy could probably we used as a brood lake, right now there are not enough fish in the lake to collect eggs.
