Posts: 186 Location: Kaukauna, Wisconsin | Anybody know how to make thru-wire baits? I want to know where to get a drill bit that long and how to attach the hooks and all of that good stuff.

The easiest way to do a single piece acurately is while it's still on the lathe. You'll waste a lot of wood doing it with a hand drill. bs

Posts: 1046 | Just put it in a deep-belly drillpress and use slower RPM`s so that skinny bit does not heat-up! I have drilled 14" thruwire baits and could probably go bigger(1 peice that is) I do have a special guide I made for the big stuff, but you can definately do it!

Crane Swivels work good for attaching the hooks, but you can make your own hook hangers out of strong wire if you want also. Ty

Posts: 186 Location: Kaukauna, Wisconsin | How would you do it while it is still on the lathe? Also where would you get a bit long enough and what is the guide you are talking about?

You drill the hole in the wood chunk before you shape it on the lathe. The hole doesn't have to be perfectly centered. The shaping on the lathe will take care of that.

Posts: 1046 | www.Grainger.com, they have 1/8" bits to 18" and Ace hardware has them to 12". Make sure its a highspeed twist drill and NOT A WOODBORE! 12`er at Ace is about $7.99

Posts: 17 Location: mn | The guys on this forum build striper lures and a person gives a little how-to on center drilling for wire-thru. Check it out. http://www.stripersonline.com/ubb547/ultimatebb.php/topic/11/2818.h...
