Muskie must be a minimum of 50" and weigh no less than 30lbs
Any fish brought in not meeting minimum requirements will result in entrants disqualification.

What happenned did we lose our favorite MOMC ? I still can't believe people are still running kill tournaments for muskies, St-Clair must have to many fish to be able to sustain such a great fisherie and kill tourneys as I know of no other place that would last under those conditions.

Surprised to see TWO LURE COMPANIES SPONSORING THIS AND A MUSKY SHOP!

Deplete the resource to advertise a business depending UPON the resource? Sensible commercial path indeed.

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see anything about the musky being dead to be weighed.

I also didn't see anything about live weight being taken and the fish must be released.

Who knows? Perhaps the tourney promoters can chime in and do a little better job on the website and explain what is going on.

full list of rules is not on the site. I do not see anywhere that shows a disqualification or a penalty for a dead fish. Such a sad tournament. Not all muskies reach 50"'s in length , why kill a bunch of fish that size. It will hurt the fishery in the long run

I actively fish muskie on LSC. I have been observing the muskie related fishing practices/behavior for several years. This is not new...

There are still a couple of these tournaments each season on LSC... To my knowledge, the big money tournaments(like this one) are not affiliated with the MOMC. Because there is big money and it is a big lake, the tourney format requires that the fish is weighed. Weight is the #1 criteria, then length. There are efforts by most of the participants to handle the fish with care and attempt to release it. A lot of the participants have elaborate live wells to keep the fish in good shape. Remember many of the participant are also fishing from large boats(i.e 24-40' yachts). Running across the lake in a yacht with a fish in a suitable live well does improve the fishes odds of surviving. The bad news is that there are usually a couple big fish that don't make it...

There is a lot of history on LSC and some of the old time muskie veterans are slow to change. However, great changes have been made and will continue as a result of the public pressure. And, there are a lot more conservation minded anglers fishing LSC these day (I would say the vast majority). I don't condone this practice and would never participate in any tourney that is conducted this way. I really wish the entire fishing public felt this way. Take away the money and the problem goes away...

FYI -

April 24, 2005 - The Lake St. Clair Muskie Shop is disappointed to announce that we chosen to withdraw as a sponsor for the Lake St. Clair Muskie Showdown. Our disappointment is in the uneducated fishermen who are making such a noise over this event. Our goal, as muskie fishermen, is to enjoy the lake and educate our customers.

As charter captains, we're out on Lake St. Clair 7 days a week during muskie season. These fish are our livelihood. How foolish would it be for us to participate in a practice that would deliberately endanger our source of revenue and enjoyment? We boated over 750 muskie last season - many of them far exceeded the legal limit - but we kept none of them. We've been fishing muskie for 18 years. Last year we caught the biggest muskie of our lives (38#, 56"), but the thought of keeping that fish never crossed our minds. Our licenses say that we can keep one legal muskie a day; but from the first day of the season to the last, we practice catch-and-release procedures, and kept none.

Lake St. Clair is unlike other lakes in its sheer numbers of muskie. Unfortunately, most of the bad responses we've gotten have been from people who have never fished Lake St. Clair, and don't have any idea of the numbers of muskie here! No - killing one or two "monster" muskie for this tournament will not hurt the population on the lake. It's unfortunate that some people have gone to such great lengths to cause an uproar over this event without finding out the facts first.

We decided to pull our sponsorship in the hopes of educating the very people who oppose this tournament. We teach several muskie seminars each year, and the first thing we open with is "catch and release". Furthermore, we have just been in contact with some agencies who are putting together a response, as well as factual information on this event. We still welcome your response and comments, and will post the informational articles as they become available.

Please know that we would never participate in any event that would deliberately endanger the muskie population on this great lake.

Honestly I find it sad how you could think that nothing could harm " your perfect fishery". There are so many fish and so many big ones. I find it funny how you call people who care for a fish uneducated. Not all muskies grow to 50", just like not every human grows to 6 feet. What if you start pulling out all the large females? Thier genes will be removed from the lake and the smaller fish will reproduce and your chance of breaking 38 pounds will be that much harder.

Glad its you body of water and not mine. Good luck with everything and nice pics on your website. I am sure this one made it

Catch and kill should never be promoted in a musky tournament, and in this day and age of catch and release it is a very old world practice that should be abolished!

Ya know, all we have to do if we don't like the tourney is ...
1. Don't fish it ...
2. Don'y buy anything from the sponsors ,and don't fish with the guide services who do sponsor it ...
3. let them know that is why ...
A loss of revenue is exactly the opposite goal of sponsorship ... Let your $ do the talking ..... I have never fished LSC, but I can't help but thinking killing any big fish is bad .... just my 2 cents .....
