Headed to Wabigoon in mid June for first time... what can we expect from the lake, areas to concentrate on, productive baits? We're staying on northwestern end near Dryden.
Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

well to start, muskie season doesn't open til the third saturday in June (i believe), so you might want to check that out.

Wabigoon is a great lake and is often overlooked due to the quality water nearby. is not clear water as far as Canada is concerned; bright colors work well. One of my favs early in the year is Grim Reapers wildcat spinner bait in black with green blades. also fundally muskie spin (not candy but the spinner bait) is nice and compact, i like the black skirt with either red-orange blades or the yellow-orange blades. hot colored 6" jakes twitched over developing weeds are also good. Weeds are key, but rocks heat up in the sun, so they too can be good spots later in the day. Find shallow weed/rock combos with deep water nearby and you should do good. Topwaters may be hot depending on the spring we are having; i hesitate to say anything after last year, but if that water temp is up into the mid sixties and approaching 70 they are worth a shot. good luck slick

If you are up before Muskie season opens, don't target them or you will be breaking the law. Pike, on the other hand, are abundant and VERY large. North shore bays on the tips and current breaks from the river opening to the Microwave tower, weedlines associated with those areas, the Islands grouped on the South shore (be careful over there, it's a mine field), any other water with good weeds and bays associated with deep water at the points will carry big fish for you. Walleyes that time of year are easy, and hungry. Hit the weed flats with cranks and bass style twitch baits, the Island tips next to the main river channel, and the NE corner of Devil's Island with slip rigs or jigs, a very good albeit community spot.

Early season calls for bucktails, twitchbaits, and smaller cranks like the 5" Slammer. If Muskie season isn't open, I'd stay away from surface baits. Even though I do well on topwater there for big pike, it won't be easy to convince a Ministry Officer that you are not fishing Muskies.

Steve,

Dont want to play devils advocate ... and correct me if I am wrong , the giant jackpot was orginally designed with canadian pike in mind ....how could any game officer accuse someone they are not fishing for pike when they are so effective?

I won't be the person making that judgement, the MNR Officer will. I wouldn't be fishing with an outfit that screams Muskies, but that's me.
