Location: Athens, Ohio | I need a new starter battery for my Merc 225. I'm looking at an Optima battery, or a cranking battery made by Trojan. The Troj has more CCA's. I did a search on M1st and found a number of posts where you guys like the Trojans. I don't know much about the Optimas, what do you think? m Edited by mikie 3/22/2005 11:24 AM

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I use the Orbital which is Exides competition to the optima. I also use a Trojan(scs200). Both are dual purpose rather then straight cranking. The Trojan has more reseve capacity then my Orbital, but I have yet to kill the Orbital in a fulll day of fishing. I would reccomend both types of Batteries.

| Trojans are great batteries. The thing you'll gain from the optima is that it'll run your electronics longer. Also, if you do run it dry it'll recharge itself after an hour or so to enough to turn your motor over. Minnkota batteries are made by Trojan now too. Either one is a good battery. | |||

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I blame Luke for the Trojan batteries .... He kept pushing them in any posts about batteries, so when I was in the market for a new one last year, I broke down and tried one out.. No complaints from me...

| I personally use Dual Pro LS Series. The batteries are 53lbs MCA@30degT is 1180amps with a 175minute reserve. My charging system is: for cranking I use LS 2400 for troll batt I use LS 2700 I use the 3-bank dual pro xtreme charger. This charger puts charge back into trolling batteries. Case History: I have fished all weak without having to plug up to 110v to charge up. Dual Pro website is www.dualpro.com | |||

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | I have been using the same Optima Battery for my deep cycle needs for 4 years. Before using Optimas I would have bought 2-3 batteries in the same time period! Two years ago I switched to an Optima starter battery with great results.
