Location: Mendota Heights, MN | I have been thinking a lot lately about the benefits and practiclity of tagging muskies caught.
It seems to me that given the large number of anglers, the availability of GPS, and large nets etc., we could be tagging caught fish.
I think there would be many benefits to doing so. To name a few:
- growth of fish could be tracked as tagged fish are re-caught and measured again
- location and seasonal movements could be tracked, teaching us more about their behavior
- survivability rates in stocked lakes could be statisticaly calculated
I am no fisheries expert but I am sure there are more benefits to be had.
What do you think the pros and cons of tagging fish are/would be?
Why don't we do it more now?
For those who would argue against the gathering of GPS co-ordinates of caught fish; I would suggest a secure, confidential, online database that the info could be dumped into, with limited access to the results.
Your thoughts are appreciated.
