Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | When it comes to topwater and especially tail rotators, I have not done any experimenting in a long time. I guess you could say I am brand loyal, but only because the bait works time and time again. I throw almost exclusively topraiders. Color is not all that important to me as long as it is black. They are constructed like a brick crapper, I had one that I had over 50 fish on before I had to retire it. I think the noise they give off is very important and I haven't heard any that compare to the topraider plop. |

The sound of the tail rotator type surface lures is critical to the baits success.If you dont know how to tune it or are not sure what the particular bait should sound like - GET HELP from someone that uses and understands the bait. As for color I Just like Black period with maybe a touch of white or phosphorescent color on the top to see it at night. Subtler surface baits like the rear bladed "SNODLO" types can be deadly if you are pinpointing an exact spot. Woking those type of baits so slooowwwwwyyy that the blade doesnt rotate, just waggles has produced some awesome strikes and fish. Creepers have there place as well because muskies will change their preference for speed an action on very short notice.The baits construction is critical also as discussed above.The weight of the bait is also an important factor especially on walk the dog type baits. as muskies create a water surge as they move to striKe the bait. My personal favorite last year was H20 Lures prototype RECON- It sits low in the water- Has the right weight and a tremendous but subtle action-most importanly it produced fish. There are many good ones out now including the Weagle,DA Ratt, Muskie innovations new Seducer etc. We are in the heyday of quality surface baits,ASk questions on this sight about any of them. Youll get great feedaback from the guys on how to work them ,tune them and more importantly what ones produce on a particular body of water. |
