I'm looking into the Satellite radio systems and was wondering if any of you have one for the truck and the boat.
I think it would be great for those long road trips when you can't get a decent radio station in, then when you get to the lake just pop it into the boat for some good tunes.

XM or Sirius

Any info would be appreciated.

THANKS,
Guest

What does Sirus cost? Does that work similar to XM where you buy a radio, any ideas on cost of radio?

Whichever system you choose, you can get removeable receivers that allow you to plug into either a car stereo, boom box or a portable 'ipod' type of device. If you have a long commute and/or can listen to a radio at work, it is definately worth the dough.

Just saw a commercial for a "personal" satellite radio. Looks to be the size of an mp3 / pack of smokes. Can be plugged in to other units as an alternate source. Looks cool. Didnt get the name though. Saw it on the 26th.

Just stopped at a car audio shop last week and had this discussion with the salesman.

He has had both XM and Sirius. He currently has Sirius and likes that the best. Sirius has more satellites plus has like stationary "boosters" in areas with reception problems (bigger cities) and thus better reception. Although he did say the signal only really starts to get iffy when you are in stuff like parking structures and tunnels. He said when he would lose the signal with XM it would sometimes take a while to regain it. He said he hasn't had a problem losing the signal with the Sirius and if it does, it picks up the signal again very quickly.

He didn't tell me what the exact price was but right now did say that Sirius was more expensive if you look at the actual monthly cost when you sign up. I think the XM is 9.95 a month. He said that right now if you sign up for Sirius and pay for a 12 month contract, you get 3 months free with brings the cost to like 10.00 a month. I don't know if that deal is just for 1st time or renewals as well. He said the same thing about sports as to who had what. But, didn't say anything about NASCAR switching to Sirius, which would be one of the things I was interested in.

Actually, was very cooperative and didn't really push either one. Just gave me a bunch of information. I was leaning towards XM but after talking to him Sirius sounded like it might be a better choice. After talking prices with him on stereo's, I'll have a little time before I upgrade the truck so I'll have to see how it plays out until then.

I talked to one of the guys at AMS audio in Sun Prarie.

Scott

I wonder if Sirrus would work great out here in Muskie heaven, the stereo I bought for my boat last year has Sirrus capabilities so I guess I just got to pay the monthly fees to get it. It would be a blast to get fooball games out on the water.

Ralph,

I don't know what you run for electronics, but some of the new Garmin stuff will not only run XM Satellite radio, but will also carry XM Weather.

" A unique feature to the Garmin Marine Network is the addition of the GDL™ 30 weather data receiver. Through a partnership with XM WX Satellite Weather, mariners can—for the first time—access real-time graphical weather data for the United States directly on the GPSMAP 3010C or 3006C—without the need for a separate PC interface. For those wanting more than 120 channels of XM Satellite Radio along with weather data, Garmin also offers the GDL 30A—which provides a unique audio-channel interface on the 3010C and 3006C that allows for connection to an on-board stereo."

I have sirius in my Jeep and I dont' think I could give it up now. There are lots of good music stations and just about anything you could want. Its 12.95 a month but the way I look at it is that its not even 1 CD. It is removeable and I may get the boombox to put in the boat. I hear great music that they never play on the local stations here. I was tempted to get XM because of nascar but now its coming to sirius. XM has a lot more subscribers, but thats because they have GM. Some car companies now offer both but more and more are offering sirius.

theedz-
it's $3.00 a month more i believe, but as stated, it has more to offer tech-wise and listening wise. well worth the difference
trophymuskie- yes it should work up by you; give it a shot, it's awesome!

I have XM in my car. I do love it, but have heard a lot of good things about sirius. Unfortunately mith my navigation and display screen I cant switch to Sirius, but even at that XM or Sirius is worth it. I know Tanner Wildes has it on his boat, and it does have its place for sure. I had a blast fishing with it in his boat (besides his singing, I could have done without that). I'm not biased on XM or Sirius, but the whole idea of Satelite radio is well worth it. I cant see myself being without it.

Steve

I figured it was in that ballpark. If anyone is checking into it make sure you ask about the discount. I know the guy said that if you get it for a year they have a discount or rebate or something. It might be only for new subscribers but may be worth it. He said that with the discount the cost was about the same as XM.

THANKS guys.

I know I have to get it, probably leaning towards Sirius for the NFL games.
I was in Best Buy with my daughter the other day for probably two hours listening and looking at all the different models.

SHE WASN'T TOO HAPPY, had to buy her lunch after that.

I had a radio in the last boat, and I dont know if I'll get another I dont miss it, and never listen to it while fishing, just to much noise for me the only time would be on a long run back in the eve, otherwise im trying to focus, maybe im to serious about all this fishing stuff.
