i got a new setup for this spring as i want to try some mono with some flouro leaders with it as well. thinking of trying the "flouroclear" line with a flourocarbon leader. maybe "vanish" in 20-30 lb. test?? how bout some suggestions from you guys in the know?

I use mono for muskies tossing creatures and small Slammer cranks. I like Shakespeare USA 17# or Berkely XT 17# for that purpose. I use 60# seven strand leaders, light, flexible, but no WAY is a fish going to cut the stuff.

Before the super lines I used to use Maxima 40lb mono and some of the lighter 25 and 30lb silver thread. Both were good to me, but had all the drawbacks of using mono for musky fishing. I think the Maxima was a german line, but very tough stuff!

Go with higher lb test fluorocarbon in the leader, for sure. Depending on the lures you use, you can use mono, for the main line, from 17lb test and up to 30lb. Trilene Big Game or XT and other quality lines all work well - but don't scrimp on the leader. Go at least 70lb fluoro and up...

On one of my setups I use Stren 50lb magnathin and love it. I heard a rumour that they don't make it anymore. I bought it in bulk. If you can get it its a great line. Good luck

I'll be spooling my spinning reel with 20# Sunline Fluorocarbon for critters and such. I don't consider Fluorocarbon leaders tooth-proof under the 70-80 # test barrier...........

I used to use 50lb Stren Magnathin on all of my trolling setups. I now use 80lb Power Pro due to the fact I was loosing too many fish due to the stretch. I think for casting, mono may still have it's advantages in certain situations like Steve said. My fishing consists of 95% trolling, so I use all no-stretch lines.
We did switch to flouro leaders in 80lb last year, and haven't had a problem. I also believe it increased our incidental catches of big walleyes.

I have mono on my creature rod, 20# Xt. I have been using floro leaders on my trolling rods and so far no lost fish due to leader issues.

Comment on the Stren Magna-thin 50lb. That was some darn nice line, I believe your correct in that it is no longer current production.

For minnow baits and finese type stuff, or for really clear water there's nothing wrong with using mono. Just remember you have some stretch to deal with so sharpen your hooks like a needle and you should be fine.

I think Mark has it right, Mono is fine stuff for many applications. I used monofilament exclusively until the superlines came out, I didn't like the 'soaked hand' syndrome I got from Dacron.

I would not use floro for the leader, I agree with Sworrall that seven strand is the proper leader for a jig.

I used a floro leader (80lb) once. Was in Canada on a fly-in targeting trophy pike. Lost a 50 inch class Pike that smoked a Killer Eel, it also bit right through the floro leader on it's first power run. Boated a 45 the next day, also on a Killer Eel, only this time the leader was a "piano wire" leader. I hear a lot of people raving about floro leaders, they will learn the hard way!!!
