Hi all,
I fish only for pike in this side of the planet (try last year to come for muskies in your Sabaskong Bay outing but failed).
I’ve had good success with buzzbaits and pencil/jackpot style topwaters in the past but would try something different, may be some Tally Wacker style? How about your experience?

Luca, rear prop baits work real well. I've taken many pike on Topraiders and Pacemakers and even the good old Tallywacker. I think a buzzbait has produced the most pike for me.

I've caught many big pike on Zig Zag topwater as well, for some reason usually big fish. The Weagle was hot on the Goon last year for me.

Toppers are another excellent choice for large pike.

The BS Willy topper is my favorite. Crushed the pike in Manitoba last June on it.

Some of the biggest pike I ever caught were on walk the dog topwaters. In calmer water the Dancin' Raider is a pike magnet.

For some unknown reason, the pike don't seem to miss them as often as muskies do either.

I also have had good success on buzzbaits for large pike. I also have had luck on large soft plastic baits, rigged with a single hook and no weight. The erratic action really seems to trigger the big pike.

I've had great luck in Canada with Jackpots, and twin prop baits like Topper Stoppers and an old Hellraiser mini cherry twist got CRUSHED!
I am going back to a fly in lake this June and I'm pretty pumped to go after 40+ inch pike...

Bucher Baby Shallow Raiders! Lots of flash with the flat sides..twitch, twitch..POW. Pike love 'em. If you can find some of the old ones that had a chrome/metallic finish, they are better. They quit making them because the finish didn't stay on. They were different somehow..weight, shape, ? Better twitchers anyway if you can find some.
Topwater is very fun and exciting.

buzzbaits have been best for numbers and big ones for me. followed by zig zags.

I had a day last year where in 5 casts with a pacemaker I got 3 pike over 15 pounds. It was on a very low pressured lake but still might just be a once in a lifetime deal. Other outings I've done very very well with pacemakers. I've had alot of success bulging a large spinnerbait so in essence that would be topwater as well.

Wish I could give you something new, but my best luck for surface pike has been on jackpots/zaraspooks or using a plastic with the at same action on top. or bulging baits like a buzzer or a bulged bucktail. Can't forget about twiching a small crank on the top of the water, either!

I've never had much luck w/ prop baits...but I seldem throw them anymore because for whatever reason I just never caught as many fish with them as with zig-zags, twiched or bulged baits.

Wow, since I pour my own plastics, I'm interested. Which baits you use Bob?

Thanks all for your answer.

Luca: My best plastic has been the 10" Fin-S Minnow. Here is a link to the Musky Shop so you can see it. I use a different hook than that provided. But the one included will certainly work. Hope this helps.

Thanks Bob.
I already hand pour something similar to this bait in the 10 and 12'' size and use different rig.
Nice to hear about it.

That is a VERY nice looking bait. It is similar to the Fin-S, but the tail is horizontal on yours and vertical on the Fin-S. I have no weight on my rig and only the single wide gap worm hook in a 7/0 size. It sinks slowly and is incredible on the twitch. Fishing it very slowly seems to work best. My largest muskie last year on this rig was 52" and about 35 lbs. My largest pike was right at 20 lbs. Good Luck!
