| I have 100+yds of ice I need to break thru. Whats the best tool to do this. I don't think my Tuffy can do the job itself. I was thinking of trying a 8x8 25lb plate with 6' handle. I'll bring plenty of carb bars for the ice breaker/net guy.

| Nobody has made a pass in a week out there and with the vicious cold front coming late Sat and a MR at 12:15pm I have to make an attempt. Plus last time out I saw her again!!!!! Big steam engine and I know her winter haunts....

| MuskyCore here are my two cents.
One, dont break the lights on the rear on your trailer trying to back your boat down the ramp. see if you can do anthing so you're not breaking ice w/ lens covers/lights/ of your trailer.
two, if you get your boat going in the right direction you want to go...sometimes just the weight of your craft can break the ice. slowly drive the bow of your boat a 2,3,4 or 8 feet on to the unbroken ice and hopefully the weight of it will end up breaking the ice in front of you. so, you are breaking it from the top, not "going through it" w/ the bow.
if you have a partner to take to help w/ the weight in front, that works out well.
just dont break all the lights out of your trailer when backing your boat in.

Location: lansing, il | when ya back into the lake is when the most damage gets done tailights, transducers, etc. if you can have someone sit in the back of your boat with a ice chopper, spike, shovel, paddle etc. and as you slowly back in have them chop up the ice behind ya. go slow and easy a foot at a time and you should be ok. once ya get turned around and your bow is facing the ice , do just like tomcat says. but just rememeber go slow and easy. also helps to bust out as wide a path as you can. itll help when it comes time to get back in, especially if its getting dark and your gettin cold!! |

Location: Racine, Wi | Do what The Dude and I did. Get the smallest row boat that you can find. Try to row fast and crash into it. When this fails, (and it will fail) LOL find an anchor in the boat. Throw it as far as you can. Then pull on the rope, and it will pull you forward. Clean the weeds off of anchor and repeat.
Note: Make sure to get good anchor rope, or after repeating 8 or so times, you will need a new rope and anchor. LOL

| Sounds like yoda was right. I might as well store the boat and save myself the aggrevation. On the flip side sitting at home
discussing x-mas present strategy with my wife with a screaming 1 1/2 year old in the back ground may motivate a man to do something as stupid as breaking ice and driving home with no tail lights.

| Just put someone in the front of the boat with a 10# mushroom anchor on a very short line and the guy in the back with a duckpole or paddle! It really works pretty fast for 1" or under, anything over that could be alot more unsafe! |

Location: Greenfield, WI | I saw on the History Channel show, Mail Call, that the military has an explosive that is in rope form which can be fired out over the ice. It will "blow up" a channel through the ice on contact. This tends to work only once a year per lake, before the wardens and cottage owners get upset! Keep a fish basket with you to collect floaters. (At least that is what Steve Worrall does.)
A friendly reminder is not to drop the rope in the boat or on your foot!
A better idea is to count up to 1,886,302,864,112,754 by sevens, by then the ice will be thick enough to ice fish!

Location: nationwide | It has been a few years since I have done major ice breaking. I can tell you this though.
1.) Ice will remove your keel guard.
2.) If you have a flip type boat plug change to a twist in kind. The ice can take the flip type plugs out. Don't ask me how. And going across the lake in gear at an idle breaking ice and noticing you have water coming in at an alarming rate will warm you up in a hurry, or at least you don't have time to get cold in the panic.
3.) Ice will remove tranducers, heck, ice will remove anything that is an obstruction to the smoothness of the hull.
For landing we made sure one guy had chest waders to break ice for the trailer and push it out of the way. Chop into squares like making ice in the old days and slide under existing ice.
Bring sand for getting out, even if you have a four wheel drive. Fiberglass boats will break ice just fine without damaging the hull up to 2 inches thick at least.
That is all I can think of right now, but I am sure there is more. The boat plug is a biggie!!!!! Not having a spare we used a towel, and did I mention the bilge was froze from the days prior in the freezing temps.

The best way to break the ice (in a boat that is) is to use an AXE! A paddle also works well, and so do dumb bells if you have some heavier ones laying around.
AXE cologne also works well on the women according to the commercials!  |
