I drove with Sue to Minneapolis today to watch my son Brian walk across the stage to accept his BA in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. Proud?? Oh yes. 5 years in the military (Combat Corpsman) and all the work at University...

Brian and I started fishing Muskies together when he was 8. His first legal came when he was 9, and I'll not soon forget that. When he married Sarah ( and lucky he was to find her, she also just received her degree from the same school, advanced; loves to fish and hunt, and actually eats fish and venison, too) the picture of his first Muskie was front and center on the Celebration photo board. Wow. That big a memory for him, too.

My sons and I traveled Canada, the West, and all of the Mid West together fishing and hunting over the years. They are both great sticks, and I'm proud to be able to call Brian a friend, not just my Son. Another best friend and also my son Keith is on his way over RIGHT NOW with his wife Brandy and son Cole to celebrate with Brian and Sarah; he had to work today creeling for the DNR and couldn't be at the ceremony. Brandy loves to spend time fishing with Keith, and Cole Martin is the next generation of Muskie Fishing Worralls. Keith and I spend many hours every year in the woods and on the water, and we just shared the most incredible deer hunting season either of us can remember.

So what picture did Brian insist on the most? See attached. Not the cap and gown, this one. Go figure!

If this is what a father works hard for as his kids are young, I must say it has paid off for me in a more incredible fashion than I ever could have guessed. I am a very lucky man.

No 'lesson' or 'moral of the story' here, just the musings of a middle aged muskie fisherman.

I'm especially happy Brian studied Psychology, maybe he can figure out what the heck is WRONG with the Old Man.

Steve, Congratulations to you and Sue for bringing up such a great young man, and with that new degree, get him working on Slamr right away so he doesn't screw up his engagement!

Yikes, almost two decades since I graduated Purdue University Stanford University and Northwestern after that, hoping in a few years my two girls get into the schools of their dreams. The little one wants to be a Marine Biologist, so I am encouraging her to go to the University of Miami. Sweet place to visit!

Great stuff Steve.
You have much to be proud of...from both your sons.
I too am just as proud of my girls. I'm hoping that I can look back and enjoy my time with them as much as you have with the guys.
Congrats to Brian and Sarah too.

Congrats Steve! It's no wonder that it's favourite place. Spending as much time in the outdoors as he has, hangingout near the moose and wolf would help remind him of days with family in the great outdoors.

I tip my hat to Brian, lots of work and effort but it will all pay off.

I tip my hat to a proud father, again lots of work and effort, and it already paid off!

Steve- Congrat's on fulfilling every father's dream of seeing their children progress to becoming positive citizens of this world. I'm sure he's just as proud to have a dad who cared to take the time and teach him the life skills he needs to survive in this sometimes crazy world and to appreciate all of nature that is around us.

Brian- Congratulations on making a fathers dreams come true.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Congrats on your son! The apples never fall from the tree.......especially with deer around!
You don't qualify as an old man until you start acting like one, and if you ever do start acting that way, Sue and I will share the responsibility to hit you up-side the head to get you back to normal.......
Is there any truth to the rumour that the discussions in the Chatroom will be pushed to start at 6:00 PM so that you can get to bed by 8:00 PM?

Congrats all around; the accomplishments completed are truly not trivial tasks. May I be as successful a father as you, Steve. I have two boys too (1 and 4), my wish is that they turn out as good as yours. They've already had a couple lessons in the important stuff...'get your life jackets boys, we're taking the boat today'

(creeling for the DNR, huh? Got a couple of summers of that under my own belt...)

ha!
it's called "raising" children, not "getting lucky."
they are what they come from.

what are Brian's post-school plans?

Job well done buy son and dad! They are who you make them. There aren't as many parents
raising quality children as there used to be. Your entire family should be proud and commended.

I have my work cut out for me -- Daughter started college this Fall and my son started kindergarten!

Talk about burning the candle on both ends. Flash cards and research papers, are keeping me busy.

Lambeau,
I bet his brother could get you some violent strikes, and Dad might take you on out Pelican...if you helped Brian get a job. I too have a degree in Psychology (from Arizona, dont ask why I came back to this morning's freeezing temps) so please dont let him turn out like me, a scumbag headhunter who has a second job working for Father Worrall!

I agree - luck has only a very minimal amount to do with it. RAISING your kids, watching out for them and teaching them right from wrong and what it means to be a decent human being plays a FAR greater role in how they turn out.
