Posts: 2024 | If you don't have 5mm neoprene waders, what would one do? What do you pack when you head to the river? I'm thinking jerks (gliders), shallow running cranks, and jigs like the JMAC. Do you beach the fish or carry a net? Walk the river alone or with someone else? Thanks!

Location: Athens, Ohio | Anything with treble hooks can be a problem in the moving water, especially if water clarity prevents seeing snags. My Frabill lure retriever was a must. Shallow runners were my choice, and spinner baits like the Violent Strikes and Grim Reapers. When fishing from the bank, we used nets and my buddy would use his waders to get down to the fish for a good release. Short rods worked well in cramped casting spaces along the banks. I hope a couple of these photos will post for you, good luck and be careful out there. m Attachments ---------------- tom1-13-04.JPG (87KB - 143 downloads)

Posts: 1046 | I never carry a net and NEVER beach a shore fish. Get the fish up to your front leg area, be standing on solid bottom about knee deep if possible and flip the fish upside-down and all thrashing/fighting stops or at the very least is minimal. Remove/cut hooks and if alone you can snap a pic without taking the fish out of water. Its quite the art being a good shore fisherman, 10X harder then in the boat. For baits don`t forget like BooTails as they are fluffy when puffed and can be fished almost stationary in the current. Have fun, be safe, its a gas!

Posts: 2024 | What kind of clothing do you wear? I don't have waders (actually I have access to about a dozen at work but none of them are real thick), what would you suggest I do? Mikie, Were your still throwing spinnerbaits in December-February? Edited by esox50 11/28/2004 9:55 AM

Posts: 1046 | During the real cold-weather I only use hip-boots and stay at that knee depth. I have the 5mm Hodgemans 2 sizes to big and where wool socks, neopreme footies and I drop a handwarmer down each leg and it is very comfie in coldwaters. This works great for cold/weather/water bow/gun hunting too! I have found in extreme conditions this system is the safest for my old/broken butt! Ya, certain spinnerbaits will work year-round, really watch them though as many really suck in current situations! Edited by The Handyman 11/28/2004 10:25 AM

Posts: 2037 Location: lansing, il | having a berkley lip gripper tool or a bogo grip, can be alot better than trying to carry a net and you can easily clip it on to your belt or waders.

Location: Athens, Ohio | There are streams in SE Ohio that flow year round, full of natural (not stocked) muskies. My buddy Tom has arrangements with local landowners, much like you would for hunting on their lands. It's hard work for this old man to trudge stream banks even with minimal gear (rod, backpack with Plano boxes, retriever) but really a blast. I'm gonna change the reels over to mono if I go again this year, the super lines hold enough water to really ice up the guides. I'll try to find time to scan a couple more photos for ya. m

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin |
As an avid shore fisherman, I always make sure I have tools at my disposal that are easy to use with one hand. I like to use a back pack, and or fanny pack to carry stuff, but always keep a pliers in the pocket, or as I do, an easy to use Gerber or Leatherman product. It sucks to have to search for tools while a fish is on line and at your feet. Best to get a rough measurement, then unhook em in the water. If they swim off(which they often do), fine, they are measured. I have increments of 4 or 6" on some of my rods which works too.
| ||
