So I am out hitting a favorite spot of mine on the Fox Chain on Monday (11/22). As I cast out I see a pretty decent size bird coming. My first thought.....Hawk. As the bird comes around the point, it's a Bald Eagle!!!!

Ok, now maybe I'm an idiot but I have never seen a Bald Eagle anywhere on or near the Fox Chain! I know they don't migrate south, but it was just the oddest thing I have seen. I felt like I was up north! (Untill I lowered my head and saw more houses than trees). Honestly I would never have beleived it if I had not seen it with my own two eyes.

Anyone ever seen one on the Chain? Or anywhere close? I'm still a bit shocked about it.

Cal Sag Valley out south there has been one hanging out almost all year that I know of. Was at St James of the Sag for a funeral in July and saw it overhead.

I have heard they are around here, and some have been seen on local farms. Winter migration from the north.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure they do migrate south. That's not saying that this one hasn't taken up residence on the chain.

The one on the cal-sag HAS taken up residence as its been around all year.. I would not doubt one will take up residence around the fox chain if it has not already...

There has been one living near the Carpentersville Dam on the Fox river for a few years, as long as there is an ample food supply and they are not disturbed a Eagle will hang around

Depending on how severe the weather gets, they'll either stay up north or migrate to southern Illinios. If they can scavenge up enough food, they'll remain as far north as Northern Wisconsin.

Every winter we catch a few northerns and toss them on the ice for them to eat. It's funny watching them waddle out on the ice like Penguins to get food. They get pretty brave too, they'll come within 20 feet of us.

Phil:
I have seen one up there as well a few years ago. One was hanging around Wilmette by the lake a year or so ago. I guess they do stop by during what ever trip they are making. I have also seen dozens of loons in early spring on the chain. Now that is cool when theystart yipping.

I have seen Loons on the barbee chain in Indiana, Sandhill Cranes on webster, Osprey on Barbee chain and Tippy, and sadly Cormorants around Tippy. Probably the best year for me down there seeing different birds..

I have also seen Bald Eagles over the past few years only, around the Fox Chain in Late November as they migrate South. They never seem to stay for any period of time.

Cool to see them any way.

Generally, they'll follow the geese as they migrate south; picking off sick and wounded birds. I grew up in SD and we went to the Sand Lake Wildlife Refuge and watched the eagles every fall.
