Posts: 392 Location: KY | I picked up a red head this weekend and I’m not sure what to do next. Seriously, when and where is the red head pattern effective? I am comfortable choosing between natural and bright color patterns, but when are red heads your first choice? What watercolor, temp, weather, weeds rock, etc. Thanks, Bruce Boys don’t get too carried away with this one. ![]()

Posts: 285 | I like redheads as a change of pace color choice, when other colors don't seem to produce. Typically known as a northern pike color, I have had lots of strikes by big muskies, especially on redhead topwaters. Plus they have that old-time look to them, and of course the good karma of being the official lure color of Team Blood Hook! Hope to see you at the Cave in April. Later, papa joe

I have also noticed that redhead topwaters work great with bass and musky. But I'm not sure how redhead colors would work below 5'. Just wondering, but how is redhead similar to northern pike?

Posts: 146 Location: Wayzata, MN | One of my favorite lures is a 10" jointed redhead believer [the 'pink steel']... bought'er in 1985. Loud, loose, clacky... beautiful bait. I have my best luck with that lure in green water [early bloom conditions]... it appears to 'glow' in water like that... But, I use it all year, as a change of pace, or confidence bait. I have a redhead Super Shad too...

Redhead is certainly my favorite lure pattern. I’ve been successful with that pattern on stick baits, Rattletraps, Zara Spooks and R & W bucktails on all species that I fish for: Small and Largemouth Bass, Pike and Muskies. The only lure I use regularly that I don’t have in Redhead is the Jitterbug. Now that I think of it, that’s an oversight that requires attention. I get razzed from my fishing partner for my Redhead obsession (who is very willing to toss the Redhead Super Spook that I gave him for his birthday) but it’ll still go on my X-mas list. I think the distinct color contrast in profile is easily targeted by the predator. Having used it throughout the entire fishing season, I have no reason to think it would not work at any depth in any time of the year.
