I moved to NM from PA a few years ago and thought I was the only misplaced muskie hunter down here. So today I see a red Ford Ranger with a Rollie and Helen's bumper sticker in Albuquerque. Are you out there? Anybody know this person? I would be interested in comparing notes on the muskieless (for now) land of enchantment. It would be nice to find somebody interested in catching pike (hey, we'll take what we can get) around here or even taking the road trip to Colorado for tigers (or even worse the long road trip to real muskie waters). Email me at [email protected]. Chris

Posts: 32926 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | No kidding, I went to high school in Los Lunas, lived in Bosque Farms. I lived in Los Vegas, NM for awhile, El Rito for awhile, and Los Alamos for a couple years, too. Fort Sumner's the place where I have a bit of land yet.

Posts: 1286 Location: Stevens Point, Wi. | Spent 9 years in the 70's, in Las Cruces and Alamogordo. Some good Pike fishing in the 2 reservoirs by Truth or Consequences. You should also try strippers there, some real hogs!

I believe I read it here on the "news trawler" that NM has tried stocking tigers to control some goldfish populations? You might find muskies closer than you think. Make a call to DNR and I'd love to hear back about what they tell you. Somedy I'd like to be living down there. Spent a bit of time in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos. I love it. My wife got her master's @ UNM in Alb. as well so its a special place for both of us. Be sure to eat at Frontier in Albuquerque, I love the breakfast burritos with plenty of red chile! Good luck! Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Jonesi, you crack me up.. at first I thought you misspelled Stripers as in those long silver bass..then read through and almost fell outta me chair. Chris, Get ahold of Dave Fornara from Esox Angler Magazine. He is from AZ and spends winters down there. If there is good inland fishing in NM he may very well know where. Jono, I discussed the tigers with the area biologist a few months ago. It is a three-year trial program to control a goldfish population in two high desert trout lakes of about 400 acres each. The lakes support a year-round population of rainbows, which are supported by fry stocking, so the water must stay cool enough to be OK for tigers. The first stocking was a fry stocking in summer 2003 followed by a fingerling stocking in fall 2003. The stocking density was actually pretty good (fingerlines at around 10/acre), there's lots of food (goldfish and suckers), a long growing season, and no big predators (other than the occasional big rainbow) to pick off the fingerlings, so I'm optimistic that they may be worth fishing for soon. They surveyed the lakes and found some 12" fish this spring, and I've heard about 18"-22" fish being caught earlier this fall. I haven't given it a try yet, but will probably give it a try sometime next fall when I'm guessing they'll start hitting 30". Currently it is managed as a catch-and-release only fishery, which will probably be continued for the forseeable future. Hopefully the fishery is popular enough that they will continue it past the three year trial program. Chris

There's actually a lake less than an hour from here that has an OK pike and walleye population and another reservoir in NW NM with a fairly dense pike population. I finally got a boat I'd feel comfortable in on Elephant Butte and gave the Stripers a try earlier this fall. Unfortunately, we were greeted by one of those Southwest thunderstorms complete with hail and high winds, which put the fish down for the time I was there. I'm planning to try again later this month. The nearest tiger lake (for now) is in Colorado, about a five hour drive. It's only 120 acres, but has some nice structure and a decent population of trout-eating tigers. I try to get up there a few times a year, but have alot of other things going on, so I don't fish as much as I did when I lived in PA and could at the river in 30 minutes. Chris
