Posts: 626 Location: ashtabula ohio | ive had some success with just plain spray paint and clear gloss and would like to try an airbrush. there is a small kit in a catalog im considering. its consists of cans of "propel" air propellant i guess, and a couple mixing jars, adjustable tip, valve...etc.. anybody ever try these ?or should i not even bother and try to get the real thing...? im not making alot of baits , just a few here and there.

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | I tried them. They are terrible. The cans of propellent will run you broke in no time and you will wish you had paid for a good one up front. They clog easily, don't spray well and are just junk in general. Look for a good used one on ebay or post a wanted note at the local art store.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | Cheapos can be a pain, get a small compressor it is much better than cans. A place that has pretty good prices and free shipping over $50 is http://www.dixieart.com/ . You can get a VL series Pasche for less than $50 and if you use water based paint, clean up is easy. Auto air paint by createx has a great color selection and waterbased.

Posts: 626 Location: ashtabula ohio | sounds good , glad i checked here first. just went to dixieart.com wow! got a little lost... h20, do you think i should get the passche set with the different tips and other accesories instead of just the brush? the vl set is 60.00?? and just saw a small compressor for 88.00 bucks at a local big lots, it has two small twin tanks, i think it was justa 2 horse power or smaller, seemed to be a good deal for a small compressor? thanks lobi and everybody else..

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | luckymusky - For the most part you do not need different tips, medium is fine. Once you learn how to use it you can get wide or narrow patterns and you can use stencils also. Small compressor is fine, but make sure you can regulate the preasure. Do not need much preasure and the consistancy of the paint makes a difference on how much preasure you need.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | Depends on the paint you use. I use the createx stuff and I bought bottle adapters that screw right on the bottles so I do not have to dump from one bottle to the next. You can also get adapters for most model paint you can buy in hobby stores, there are about 4 or so different sizes. Dixe has some also, they are kind of universal and I had to shorten the top nipple a little for the paashe. PS do not leave the end that sticks in the bottle to long (about half way down), it will not suck the paint from the bottom of the 4 oz bottle.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | Baldy - Here is a link to the page on the dixe site, http://www.dixieart.com/Createx_Bottles.html . Most Hobby stores have them also, just make sure the angle on the cap is the right one for your air brush. It hangs straighter but most will work.

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | Yes that is what I use. The top nipple has to be shortened ( it's plastic ) a little otherwise it goes into the brush to far.

Posts: 155 Location: North Metro | Check out BINKS supplies, they are good as well. Paasche is the best airbrush made, but don't forget to maintain it and clean it well because it will let down if you don't. I would not ever consider the kit you refer to, you will only get professional results with a real airbrush hooked up to a compressor. For real...

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | luckymusky - Water works for createx paint, it is waterbased. Dried paint I use a little amonnia and water. Take it apart and spray water until it is clean. Paint colors, Just get the ones you need. Stencils, I just make my own out of mylar sheets. Cardboard works also, nothing fancy. Takes a little time but they last. If you got the right cap they screw right on the createx bottles. Go back a few posts and I put a link to the page at Dixe art for the caps if you did not find them allready. Posts: 1438 | Here's the color chart for the Createx paints. Gotta scroll down about half way to find them. Can get back to the home page from here too. They've got all kinds of paints too. Flourescent, irridescent, opaque's, candy apples etc, etc etc. http://www.createxcolors.com/product_lines/airbrush_color.htm#Color... When you get really good at it you might be able to do stuff like this. This guy does the absolute best flames I have ever seen. Gotta check this out. http://www.killerpaint.com/ Scott

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | Luckymusky - I do not cut the shape of the bait. I cut out the pattern (spots, stripes or whatever) one side on each end. Sometimes it gets a little difficult to position on the bait, but with a whole sheet it stops the overspray.
