Posts: 1083 | Why didn't Beckman maintain the tighter/smaller weave of the netting that's at the top portion of the bag all the way to the bottom? Why do they do the tight/small weave at the top..but then open up the weave to a looser/bigger weave at the bottom? I've just been curious about that for a while...never really thought to ask that on a musky board before...

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | The smaller weave is kinda like a cradle.. the larger weave helps it get through the water easier... not sure if that helps..but I will say the likely hood of me using my old beckman over my new finsaver is slim...

![]() Posts: 52 Location: N.W. Ontario | Are there any problems with hooks getting tangled in the fine mesh and taking forever to get out like in a regular cradle? I've been trying to find a happy medium between a gentler net on the fish and it not taking a half hour to remove the lure. Thanks.

The soft knotless coated bags are extremely easy on the fish and in the many years I have been using Frabill nets I have never had a hook pierce the netting. Combine that with the super strong extruded hoop, the new PowRLok yoke which both carry lifetime warranties and you have a winning combination. Years ago when Frabill made the Kwik-Kradle they had the smaller weave on the bottom to serve as a cradle and the larger weave on top to help in lure release and ease of use. I suspect Beckman's idea on the fin saver is that it is their postion that the tight weave is the fin saver portion of the net..? See attached on why I absolutely love my Frabill Big Game series... a low-mid 40's fish has pleanty of room to swim in the net, in fact I had to hold it up so you could actually see the fish in the water. Posts: 1083 | Oh...I completely know, realize and understand that the top portion of the Beckman is the "fin saver" part of the net and that's their reasoning for the tighter weave up top. I just thought that they'd carry that same weave throughout the bag. I still think water would go through the tighter weave alright and not slow up a netting process nor sink your boat with holding water. ![]() I was just curious. I guess the release of water may be the only reasoning for the bigger weave down at the bottom? Seems logical I guess...

Posts: 699 Location: Hugo, MN | The biggest problem I run into is that the smaller fish really bury their nose in those larger holes.

Posts: 1083 | That and the little fish still have access to the bigger weave to split their fins.

Posts: 11 Location: Albert Lea, MN | Mack, You might want to check out the StowMaster's TS116Y Musky Net. It has small mesh throughout and is 48 inches deep (36" x 38" hoop). The netbag is made of knotless nylon and has been triple dipped in rubber to make it hook-free. And BTW, they fold up and store.

Posts: 1083 | I've always been a bit "skeptical" of nets that fold up and are stoable. I love the concept....but...has anyone ever had any problems with them colapsing and folding up on you in the most unopportune times?

Posts: 1938 Location: Black Creek, WI | When netting a fish by yourself, I've noticed that the Beckman Fin Saver is more difficult to pull through the water. Thus, I'm very happy they left the bottom with a larger loop... or the net would be near impossible to scoop with one hand. jlong

Posts: 72 | The large mesh in the bottom of the FinSaver is there for a couple of reasons. First, it allows better flow of water so you can 'scoop' a fish if you have to. If the whole thing was small mesh it would pull 5 times harder through the water. It would be like trying to net a muskie with a drift sock. Second, the large mesh helps keep the net open and not collapse around the fish like is common with all other nets. When in the water, the FinSaver retains an open U shape where all other nets are V shaped and close in on the fish. This is why/when they start rolling and getting tangled up in the webbing. I have had fish up to 51" sitting completely upright in the Magnum FinSaver and low 40" fish can easily swim around inside of the net. The first year they were available, I put 99 muskies through my FinSaver and only had 3 fish get tangled in the mesh. Compare this to about 1 in every 4 fish getting tangled in a large mesh, traditional net. Beckman is trying to make the nets even more fish friendly with an even softer rubber coating. Check them out this winter at the sportshows. Brett Erickson www.thornebros.com

Posts: 113 Location: Shoreview, MN | I used to have a Frabill, then got a Backman fin saver two years ago. The Beckman is far and away easier to work on fish due to the large, barrell-shaped bag. And the tight weave gives less trouble with hooks getting caught up. I also had more problems with smaller fish getting their heads caught in the larger weave with the Frabill than the Beckman.

that dog pic is funny. my lab inevitably seeks out my net to sleep in when he's in the boat. it's not a problem until i'm by myself and have to wake him up and get him off the net while fighting a fish at the same time!

Posts: 1083 | Those dog pix are GREAT! Man...I can't wait till I get two dogs. I think it'd be a blast to have 'em out in the boat with me. I bet it gets interesting having a dog, let alone two, in the boat with you when you get to the point of landing a fish! :D

Posts: 1083 | Man...that is great. Now I want a dog more than ever. Dogs rule. They must think the net is their "bedding." Something ingrained in their animal instincts...

Posts: 1046 | I have a special proto-type fin-saver directly from Scott Beckman that the WHOLE NET is the small mesh and triple dipped. This net is the best option out I have used, no little fish will bury, its just as easy to scoop as any of the others, alone included and the is hardly any fin damage(every net has some). I asked if this would be availble in the future and they said it did not look like it. Well the one I have everyone that fishes with me would like one after using mine, to bad cause it is the hottest thing since sliced bread. P.S- most of the time the hooks just lay on-top the mesh, not inside! Super easy removel!

I guess to me...it just seems like the sensible thing to have on the market.
