Posts: 226 Location: Downers Grove, IL |
Ok, I've only had the bug for a couple of years, but am proud to say that this year I've boated 12 fish including my biggest to date, a 45"/30 # (est.) pig.

My question is this. After netting the fish, I've had trouble getting the hooks out as cleanly as possible do to the fish thrashing about and in several instances, hooking herself worse than when she was netted. I net the fish the first opportunity available, vs. playing her and wearing her down. Am I netting them while they're still "too green"?

I'm prepared w/ hook grabbers, knipex cutters, pliers, etc. I want to get these fish back in as healthy as possible but feel like I'm not doing something right as these fish thrash in my net and catch extra hooks doing so.

Thanks for any advice.

Jeff

Oh - I use a Power Catch Net w/ a treated bag.

And while I'm posting - anyone know how to get rid of the
/ symbols in my post? :)

| ||

as for the crap in the post, go under control panel and make sure this "Use rich edit box when composing messages?" box says NO

Posts: 294 Location: Suspended | I doubt you're doing anything wrong. One option is to hold the fish with a boga grip while it's in the net to reduce head movement, I beleive it helps. To loose the extra characters change the prompt "Use rich edit box when composing messages?" to NO in the control panel for your log-in..

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | It sounds as if you are doing everything properly. I use a Big Kahuna bag now and have used the Power Catch in the past and have had more fish unhook themselves in these bags than rehook. My routine is as follows; Get the fish in the bag. Secure the net under a boat cleat and gather release tools. By then the fish is already unhooked, if not take hooks out/cut hooks. Picture-release. From what it sounds like you are doing the exact same thing, just a run of strange fish. Usually the fish become somewhat docile while swimming in the bag, but I had a run of fish just like that in Canada last year. In fact, I thought one fish, a 45"er had knocked itself out when it hit the side of the boat when thrashing. I wouldn't change anything if you are following the above steps, chalk it up to phsychotic fish. As for your posting problem, I am not sure this will work, but I think it will. Under the control panel listing on the top tool bar go to use rich text edit and choose no. That might take care of your problem.

Posts: 1938 Location: Black Creek, WI | I agree with Norm. YOu seem to be doing things properly. Its a long shot, but perhaps the fish are getting hooked in the bag too close to the hoop.... so the fish is in essense out of the water while you are attempting to unhook it? Try to make every effort to have the fish go DEEP in the bag before "scooping". That way if the hooks do entangle in the bag... there is more slack for the fish to pull around and NOT stick itself further. And.. the fish remains in the water and becomes "docile" much fast too. jlong

Posts: 226 Location: Downers Grove, IL | thanks for the advice guys. I thought I always tried to keep the fish completely submerged but I'll make a conscientious (sp.) effort. Thanks for getting me straight on all that goofy

stuff in my posts too! ![]()

I actually put a Beckman fin saver bag on my lucky Frabil hoop. I LOVE it. The bag seems to stay open in the water and it doesn't come to a point like some nets. I am sure I can get in there and get a fish unbuttoned in half the time. Even when the fish rolls it doesn't seem to all bunch up like the older nets I have had. I would really reccommend this bag. I will guarantee it will reduce your handling time. You will get wet more on your releases though, but I can live with that. Brett Waldera

Hey Bret, Funny you mention your net set-up. Ive done the exact same thing. Purchased a Beckman and two months later won a Frabill. Liked the frabill handle & hoop and the Beckman finsaver bag. I put the two together and got what I thought was the first ever Fra-Beck or is it a Beck-bill or um a fra-man. Any way this works great for me and I gave the leftover hybrid to my partner for his boat. Still a good net as well for him. hey it was a freebie for him so of course its good. The Frabeck had no prob whatsoever with a 48" 30# last week either. Had tons of room to spare for my mext personal best.

Posts: 5874 | I'll usually free spool my reel, once the fish is in the net. I think if you have tension on the line, the fish feels it, and trys to get away. Also, I'll tap the fish on the head, before I try to work on the getting the bait out. They usually thrash a bit, and then settle down some. If just one hook, I try to use a pliers to remove it. If more than one, I just cut them all, and get the bait out, then go back to remove any pieces.
