friends at MuskyFirst,
I've mentioned my family several times on this forum in the past couple of years. To me, fishing is a lot more about relationships than numbers posted (my excuse for poor numbers, no doubt ). My 17 year old nephew, Ben Massie, (who I've always been terribly proud of) fished his first year in the Walmart BFL here in Indiana. This has been a dream of his as long as I can remember. He has practiced the mechanics of casting in his basement endless hours while most kids would be found playing Gameboy. He has logged countless hours on the farm ponds and creeks around our area. He and my son have made hours of video tapes pretending to be hosts of a TV fishing show or pretending to fish a live tournament. He has been kicking his Dad's, his cousin's (my son Jake) and my butt for a good 4 years now. The culmination of his hard work was realized this past weekend on the Ohio river where he placed 2nd overall on the co-angler side of a 2 day super tournament ( a field of 110 co-anglers). This not only won him some serious coin but also qualified him to advance to post season regional competion next month on Kentucky Lake. He finished the year in 22nd place out of over 200 anglers in the Hoosier division. He fished 4 out of a possible 5 regular season tournaments and placed in the top 10 in two of them (he blanked in 1). Now he's fishing for a new Ranger boat against the top co-anglers in 4 other divisions. Thanks for indulging a very proud uncle!
the smile says it all........

That's awesome, dawg! Glad to see a kid doing something useful with his life!
I think he's really got his priorities in line and hope for him only the best and continued success w/ his angling.
BTW, go ahead and brag a lot; I'm guessing there was more than just a little influence from the Uncle in the molding of this fine young man...
Best of luck to him in his quest for victory (and that Ranger).
K.

That is great!!!
CONGRATS!!!
I am glad to see some younger guys out fishing. I am pretty young myself, and dont know many my age that fish. Everyone always is doing something else. I often wonder what fishing will be like in 20 years because of this. We need to encourage young people to get out, and also let them have some fun while fishing. My gereration and the ones even younger have so much other stuff going on, and it is a shame that more are not into this GREAT sport. I love it and live for it.

You sure can brag a little. Sounds like a bright kid. I am going to brag a little as an uncle too. My nephew has been on fire as of late and has won 6 go cart features this year and is second in points and catching the point leader in a hurry. The kid who is leading can no longer even run with him. http://www.lukeblazek.com/

Even with some of the difficult times, you have to love watching a family member do well in life. Tell your nephew congratulations for me, Todd.

sd,
This is a great thread! I started out as a Bass angler, and bass fishing still runs near top on my list of things to do. I hope to see your Nephew onstage holding a great big check someday. Keep him away from Muskies, though, they will mess him up something fierce.

I can only imagine what I could learn from him if he caught the "Musky Bug". The word "trolling" keeps popping up in the conversation and he shudders! ( I use it to mess with him and my son all the time. Then I remind them that I've caught the biggest fish in the family so far and it was caught trolling. Heh heh!) I still prefer casting myself. Once a basser, always a basser I guess!

pay no attention to that white tuna barge in the left hand corner. It's really a bass boat and runs 75mph....no REALLY!

Todd, coming from a race fan, that's cool, that's how a lot of nascar drivers got their start!

Tomy, this kid has no fear and races his kart more like a saturday night racer. He pases where nobody else passes, goes two wide into one lane corners and always seems to come out smelling like a rose. His first victory this year, he beat 3 factory cart teams racing the national circuits. The first time he ever got into a cart was a rental and he swept the show and even had a pass in the grass, driving around a light pole into the lead and never took his foot off the gas. He drives with his kahonies on the sterring wheel.
