I have been looking for a good measuring procedure for a long time. There just doesn't seem to be a good way to measure these fish without putting undo stress on them. I think I may have finally found the best way to do it, and get an accurate measurement. I have been using the Frabill musky cradle. The cradle floats, so after I unhook the fish I open the cradle and lay it next to the boat in the water. After a couple of pics just lay the fish in the cradle. You can use the ruler on the side of the cradle, but as you can see I still use the floating stick to measure.

By using the cradle in the water there is no extra time out of the water. No vertical holding to measure, no removal of the slime layer. Its extremely easy on the fish and you get a good measurement.

I have one too, and really like the cradle. It's easy on the fish, just like Norm said.

I had a cradle for one season. It's a two man operation. So when fishing alone, you need a net.

Also, trying to scoop up a crazy fish in a cradle is dangerous due to you hands/arms being so close to the fish.

Just my opinion.

Midge,
I still use my Kahuna to net all my fish. I don't like the idea of trying to use a cradle for landing either. I see that I wasn't that clear above.

I net the fish, unhook it, place the cradle in the water, remove fish from the net, take pictures, put fish in the cradle if a measurement is desired.

As you can see from the pic above the cradle floats, so it is a great tool in a one man operation especially. Let it and the fish float next to the boat, get your measurement and even a pic in it if you want and then slide the fish out and away it goes.

I use it purely as a release/measuring tool and not as a landing tool.

Cabela's has it for $70, I went to Frabill's site first but they don't even have it on there.

I checked out Rollie and Helens. They have them for $66. Well worth the price when you see how easy it is on the fish.

The neat thing about them too is that they roll up and store really easy along the side of the boat. Stores as easily as a 60" stick.
