I just wanted to tell my son, and my favorite fishing partner, Happy 10th Birthday.

Eric, you have always been excited about being in the outdoors with me, especially Muskie fishing. You have attended MI meetings with me for over 4 years, and I love having you with me. So, along with the normal presents you'll get, you are now a member in good standing, of the Milwaukee Chapter of Muskies Inc.

How about we take your new rod and reel, and get you your first legal entry, on your Birthday, on Pewaukee Lake today?

Happy birthday.

Love,

Your Dad[:)]

Hope he does catch the fish you are after.....would be the perfect setup! Take care.......[:sun:]

[:praise:] Well, he did it. Not on his b-day, but tonight. Hit Pewaukee about 5:30 PM. Started trolling right away. About 7:15, I heard the reel clicker go off. Gave the throttle a quick twist, grabbed the rod, and handed it to Eric. I pulled in the other baits and then sat back and watched the show. A little coaching and the fish was at the boat and in the net. He did a great job, keeping the rod tip up, and not letting any slack in the line.

I got the fish unhooked, lifted it out, and showed him how to hold it properly. A couple quick pictures, and a quick measurement, and back in the water. I coached him on holding the fish by the tail, how to gently move it back and forth until the fish regained it''s strength. A quick flip of the tail, a splash in the face, and it swam away strong.

What a beautiful fish. 35" with a big head. Eric''s first legal! He had a smile from ear to ear, I was so proud. I laughed when he realized that the front of his life jacket was all slimy! My boy got slimed!!

I can''t wait to get these pictures back, although I will see this night in my mind''s eye for a long time. Happy Birthday, Pal.

I think that the picture I have in my mind says it all. My son is only 6, and we''re headed up to LOW in 5 days. Can''t wait, hope he ends up with the same. Congrats!!!

My son, Brian, got his first when he was 10, and that polaroid picture from Thiel's Lakeview Inn was top and center on a 'growing up' picture board he and his new wife Sarah put together for their wedding a week ago.

Keith, my youngest, now 21, got his when he was 9.

These fish were WAY more exciting for me than ANY I have ever personally caught, except for maybe the Wabigoon fish Keith netted for me; without him there, my lifelong goal would still be unfulfilled!

Great job, and send pictures to Jason Smith, he will get them up on MuskieFIRST very soon!

Thanks Steve,

I will get the pics to Jason. It's amazing, I can't really remember his first steps, or his first words. I have them on video, but the memory is faint. But I remember his first little bluegill at 2 1/2, his first perch through the ice of our Leech Lake trip at 4, his first decent walleye on LOTW at 6, his first smallmouth at 7, the big muskie that stole one of his first crappies. I'm sure I will remember his first muskie vividly for a long time. Same with the daughter. She is 5, and her first walleye, 18", came this year on Winnebago. There's something special about kids and their first fish.

I know there are many "firsts" in our children's lives. Is it just me that remembers the "firsts" from fishing, hunting, outdoors, etc, better than the normally important ones? Or is that just the way it is for us outdoor types? My wife can remember the all the minute details of the normal things, but I cannot. Strange.

It's cool to share this with those who understand. Thanks,

Shep[:)]

Hey Eric, welcome to the club and way to go on your first Muskie!

Shep, I haven''t got any kids of my own but I did get the great pleasure this week of learning how happy my girlfriend''s neice was when she received the rod and reel I gave to her. I can''t wait to see her in action in a couple of weeks when we''re all together on Lost Land Lake.

I gave her a Shimano Bantam Crestfire w/ 10# Trilene XL and a 5''6" medium action Lightning rod. She''s out there catching bass already and it''s only a matter of time until Grandpa has her on the Muskies!

I can''t explain how good it felt to know how much she appreciated my gift and to think that I hopefully helped create another Muskie Junkie or at least another person who will enjoy a lifetime of fishing for whatever she wants.

Good luck to both of you in your Muskie endeavors,
Jono

Shep, please wish Eric a belated congrats from me. This must have been proud Papas best memory to date. I still remember my 1st legal and several for others out of my boat. But to be with your son on that day has to be the highlight of all highlights. Again, CONGRADULATIONS ERIC, great job and remember to thank dad once in a while.[] [] []
