Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I have a old heavy Stratos 201 on a tandem trailer and will be putting 4 electric drum brakes on it. I am wondering which tires are the best for longevity and stopping with the new brakes. The axles are 3000 pounders. I was running Carlisles and they didn't seem to last??? I will be getting the axles aligned too. That might have been my problem. I know the new Rangers come with Goodyears, but I haven't seen them last very long on vehicles... you know good for a year hehehe Thanks for any help in advance.

Posts: 188 Location: Chicago | Jo Stay away from the Carlisles, they are junk! We had a flat on the way to Cass last year and my buddy did some research and he found that there are lots of people who had their trips ruined by Carlisles, they know they have a problem. There are posts on Websites just like this one that listed all the issues. John Ryan had 2 flats on Carlisles on his way to the CAve Run PMTT, one on the way there, and another on the way home. I think he went with the Good year. Sorry I cannot be more specific, stay away from Carlisels Rob

Posts: 11 Location: Pleasant Prairie, WI | Since you already mentioned getting the axles aligned, make sure the tongue weight is also correct. You want the trailer to ride level when attached to the vechicle. If you load the boat up, try to distribute the weight. Maintain same tire pressure all the way around and buy a good quality TRAILER tire. Radials run a bit cooler and might be a good ideal with drum brakes being added to all axles.

Posts: 5874 | I blew a Carlisle last month after towing 20 miles. Tread came apart, and caused a bunch of damage to the trailer. Also caused the guy tailgating me to purchase new BVD's! The tires had maybe 5,000 miles on them, and I always kept them aired up. I now have new Goodyear Marathon's on my trailer.

Location: Minneapolis, MN | Goodyear Marathons. Make sure you get the right class tire for the weight of your boat. Marthons come in A, B, and C class (Weight Rating) tire sizes.

Posts: 1245 Location: Madtown, WI | I blew one carlyle on the way up north and then two weeks later had the other one separate and almost blew as well. Had LESS then 500 miles on them. Junk. I have Denmans now...have heard good things. Cory

I had same problem with Carlisles. Blow out that also damaged a tail light. Goodyear Marathon radials now running fine.

Posts: 22 Location: Twin Cities | Thank for the Public Service Announcement! I have (had) Carlisles on my Tuffy -- After reading these posts I have been keeping a close eye on them. Well, it happened yesterday, blew on out on the highway. Thanks to the fact I have been extra observant while driving it was a very non-eventful blowout. I just said calmly to my partner, "remember those posts about Carlisles blowing out?" Then slowly pulled over and changed the tire... I have an appt. for Goodyear Marathons on Monday... Good Fishing! -Dean

Posts: 364 Location: Kentucky | After my Carlisle blowout happened and I changed the tire and got home, I noticed a baseball-sized lump on the inside of the other one when I took them to the Goodyear store. The tires were not very old and I try to monitor them closely. I'm avoiding them at any cost.

Posts: 216 | I have had two carlisles separate this season, I talked to their customer service thay said if I send them the tires thay would replace them. But I dont know why I would put two new ones on when they cant be trusted. Stay away from carlile tires!!!!!

Posts: 1769 Location: Algonquin, ILL | I have Carlisles that are 4 years old and have never had a problem with them, However most of my trailering is done well below highway speeds maybe that is the problem they simply can not handle the higher highway speeds, with that being said when the time comes for new tires I will go to Goodyear

Posts: 1185 Location: Wishin I Was Fishin' | I went with the Denman for $60 each....figure if they last 75% as long as the Goodyear...I'm still way ahead. I also got the axles aligned at Accurate Alignment in Appleton for $106....I was told the front axle was pretty good....better have been I just put it on...but the rear axle had toe out.....wonder why my tires were wearing??? She pulls much better now! I would recommend an axle alignment on even a single axle trailer....way less $$$ in the long run

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | SWorrall and S Bendall...if you guys have read this post you might want to reconsider what tire is put under Tuffy from the factory... I know the trailers have Carlisle sticker on them but suspect they might let you spec a different brand of tire.
