Posts: 925 | I bought this thing over a year ago and just got around to figuring it out. Couple questions, when you load the MapSource (Waterways & Fishing Hotspots) software on the computer and then load the chosen maps onto the GPS, it always overrides what is already on the GPS. For instance, if I load the Bemidji area on the GPS and then later want to load Lake Vermilion on, it deletes the Bemidji area. If I want to add a lake or area, do I have to put everything back on? Cass and Vermilion at the same time? I haven't spent alot of time figuring it out, but I thought maybe you guys could help speed up the learning curve for me. Thanks guys - Midge

Your best bet is to grab as much as you can in MapSource and make one decent sized file of the lakes you need and upload that back onto the 162. Someday all units will be plug and play chip ready I hope!

Posts: 925 | So if you save a bunch of way points and stuff on the GPS itself and then wanna add another lake from MapSource, you will lose all your data on the GPS when the new files come on? Or do you make sure to save FROM gps onto the computer and then re-load those saved files with whatever new you wanna do?

Posts: 2515 Location: Waukesha & Land O Lakes, WI | Your Lat Lons that you saved on the GPS will remain. Any mapping you add will overwrite the mapping you added from Map Source. Before I added V5 to my Map176, I had a ton of lake points in the system...when I added the V5 maps, my lat lons were right on the spots I made them. If you add anything to the Map Source data from your computer, that info may be lost when you overwrite the file with new stuff. Edited by Gander Mt Guide 8/12/2004 3:00 PM

Posts: 145 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Midge Your waypoints will stay on the gps unless you delete them. For instance....if you enter a bunch of waypoints on Cass and the at a later date load the LOTW map, your previous maps will be written over but you way point will remain in the gps memory. You can create map sets of multiple lakes on your computer and load them at any time. For instance....you could have a map set of Wisconsin lakes with a bunch of lakes on it and another map set of Minnesota lakes. Each time you download a mapset onto the gps it overwrites the previous one. This makes it a good idea to make a mapset that inckudes a good number of lakes.

Posts: 544 Location: Alsip, Il | Just for your information Lake of The Woods on the new version Fishing Hot Spots Central 5 is too large for your unit. I called Garmin and they sent me an earlier Version 4 at no cost, it supposely doesn't have as many features, but I couldn't really find any difference on my computer. The older version they give you an unlock code etc., it's only good for LOTW, Rainy and Eagle, but the other lakes besides LOTW, you should be able to download from the 5 version. FYI, Al

Posts: 925 | Bottom line is when you "load" different maps onto the GPS, you don't lose anything you have saved. Basically, just the map "outline", is replaced. Thanks guys. I think it makes sense to me.
