I trying to decide where to go for a quick 2-day trip in September. I live in the Twin Cities, and would like it to be no more than a four hour drive (LOTW is therefore out). I'm looking for a place where action is first, but still a chance for a big fish.

I've only caught 2 fish-neither legal-in my first 3 years fishing for muskies (unfortunately I haven't had much of a chance to be on the water on any regular basis), and I would like to get a few fish on the line.

I'll probably be going with a pretty good muskie fisherman, so I'm probably not looking for a guide, but I would still welcome any suggestions if that's appropriate to your recommendation.

Thanks for the help,
Bill

Mille Lacs or Lake Vermilion.

If the wind is bad Mille lacs can be unfishable but, Vermilion will always have fishable water in wind and is a far better
'action' lake with size.
Leave friday around noonish - arrive by 4pm at latest, set-up camp, prep boat n' gear, Fish from 5pm till dark.
Sit around camp fire, eat and tell lies. Get up at 5am Sat am and fish during sunrise as fog burns off the water and the rest of the day on one of the most beautifal waters in the country.

Mille lacs is nice but, Vermilion DESTROYS it by offering one the total angling experience.
